Ozga Shines As Owls Win Game One of USA Series
South Alabama (11-16; 2-8 Sun Belt) jumped out in front early after a first inning run coupled with a Sean Laird three-run homer gave USA a 4-0 advantage.
USA's Ethridge pitched three scoreless innings before Nick DelGuidice drove in Ozga with a double down the left field line in the fourth. Colby Gratton followed with a two-out double which scored DelGuidice and FAU trailed 5-2.
Ozga then hit a towering homer to lead off the FAU sixth, in an inning that would end Ethridge's night.
Alex Pepe continued his effective mid-relief pitching, a flawless seventh to lower his ERA to a staff-best 2.41.
It would be Ozga again picking up the Owls in the bottom of the seventh - hitting a two-out double into the left-field corner which scored Troy Bubley from first and tied the game 5-5.
Chris Schmitt took the hill in the eigth and retired the side, giving FAU th e opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the inning. it proved well, as DelGuidice led off the inning with a single and would be moved to third when Anthony Mesa laid-down a squeeze bunt that plated the go-ahead run.
Leading 6-5, Schmitt would close it out in the the top of the ninth to give FAU the win.
FAU improves to 16-10 overall and 5-7 in Sun Belt play with the victory and will be back in action tommorow at 4:00PM EST for game two of the series.
