NFL DRAFT: Gulf Coast High grad Small gets tryout agreement with Redskins
By GREG HARDWIG
Monday, April 27, 2009
Gulf Coast High School graduate Corey Small has a tryout agreement with the Washington Redskins, his agent said Monday.
Brett Mankey of Capital Sports Management said Small, a cornerback from Florida Atlantic, will be brought to minicamp to compete with another cornerback, Doug Dutch of Michigan, who was signed as an undrafted free agent, this weekend.
"I think he's got a good chance,'' Mankey said. "… I'm confident that Washington's a good fit.''
Small could not participate in pre-draft workouts after suffering a broken fibula in the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game three months ago. He has fully recovered from the injury, but Mankey said the fact that NFL teams did not have numbers, such as a 40-yard dash time, likely hurt Small's draft prospects.
"I think he would've been drafted,'' Mankey said.
The 5-foot-9, 183-pound Small was third on the Owls in tackles with 86, and had four pass interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. He had 103 tackles as a junior, and his 13 career interceptions are the most at Florida Atlantic.
"Almost a third of the league is undrafted,'' Mankey said. "He's a good ballplayer, and he's got good instincts. He's aggressive.''
Dutch, 5-11 and 204 pounds, switched from wide receiver to cornerback prior to 2007 spring drills at Michigan. and played mostly on special teams as a senior.
The Redskins currently have five cornerbacks on the roster, but only three – Fred Smoot, Carlos Rogers and DeAngelo Hall – played last year. Michael Grant and Byron Westbrook were on the practice squad. Washington also drafted a cornerback, Kevin Barnes of Maryland, in the third round on Sunday. Washington also has starting safeties LaRon Landry and Chris Horton, and backups Kareem Moore and Reed Doughty on the roster.
Small's former high school teammate, Jake O'Connell, became the first Shark to ever be drafted when he was selected in the seventh round by Kansas City on Sunday. O'Connell played tight end at Miami of Ohio. Naples High graduate Spencer Adkins, a linebacker from Miami (Fla.), was picked in the sixth round by Atlanta.
My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!
