Owls In Deep Hole With Game Three Loss To UNO
FAU got behind early as Brent Adheen could not contain UNO early, giving up three runs quickly.
The Owls had scored three times in the seventh and Barry Rooks threw seven shutout innings in long relief but it was not enough to overcome an early 5-0 deficit Sunday.
In the second inning Mike Gipson issued two walks, threw a wild pitch and Nick Mitchell followed with a two-RBI single, extending UNO's lead to 5-0.
With the Owls still threatening in the seventh, a fly out and an unsuccessful squeeze play helped UNO get out of the jam with the 5-3 lead still intact despite the Owls loading up the bases with two outs.
It was Rooks who allowed FAU a chance at a comeback. The junior from Ovideo retired 21 of 23, striking out seven in seven shutout innings of long-relief.
With the Owls still trailing 5-3, David Burch retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth and did it again in the ninth to save his eighth game of the year.
Six games remain on the SBC schedule. FAU trails UNO by 1 1/2 games for the last spot, and must win at least 4 games, while needing some Privateer help.
