Florida Atlantic University runners Toyria Mattear and Friederike Feil will be heading to the NCAA East Regional, hosted by North Carolina A&T State.
Feil qualified for the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Penn Relays. Her time of 10:33.82 set the school record and was the best time by a Sun Belt athlete in the event this season. It is the third straight year that she has qualified for regionals at that distance.
Mattear posted two separate qualifying times in the 400 meter hurdles during the outdoor season. Her first qualifying effort came at the Miami Elite Invitational where she won in 59.61 seconds. She posted a time of 1:00.42, falling just shy of successfully defending her title at Sun Belt Outdoors.
The 2009 East Regional will be held May 29-30 in Greensboro, NC. The preliminary heats of the 400 meter hurdles will be held at 7:55 p.m. on Friday, May 29. Finals of both the 400 meter hurdles and the 3,000 meter steeplechase will be held on Saturday, May 30 at 7:05 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., respectively.

Re: Mattear, Feil Ready for Regionals
Mattear’s time was good enough to finish third in her heat, but was not enough to earn her a spot in Saturday night’s final.
Friederike Feil will wrap up action at the East Regional on Saturday when she will try to qualify for Nationals in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Mattear, Feil Ready for Regionals
Feil crossed the finish line in a school record time of 10:25.06, which is also the best time by a Sun Belt runner this year. The top five runners automatically advance to the NCAA National Championships in Fayetteville, AR. Feil must hope she is one of the six runners from around the nation awarded an at-large berth to the meet.
“(Friederike) ran well, especially considering all the injuries she’s had to deal with this year,” said Alex Smolka, head track coach. “Now we just have to wait to and see if she gets an at-large selection.”
Fiel time was good for three points, making the first FAU runner to score at a Regional meet. The NCAA will announce the six athletes who received at large bids sometime next week.

Re: Mattear, Feil Ready for Regionals
Feil was hoping to gain an at-large bid to the meet after narrowly missing an automatic berth at the NCAA East Regional over the weekend. Her time of 10:25.06 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the meet was one of the six best times among runners that did not finish in the top five in their respective regions. Inspite of this, Feil was ultimately not one of the six at-large runners chosen to participate at the National Championships
