Pre-season Camp Day 7: Scrimmage
View Stats Here
“The offense had some great plays and some terrible things,” said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU’s head football coach. “They didn’t put many things together. The defense did well and we got a bonus which was interruption. The weather forced the team to leave and regroup. The defense left with an advantage and the offense at a disadvantage.”
The scrimmage format awards points to the offense in a traditional fashion. The defense earns points for stopping the chains in three downs, three points for a turnover and six for a score.
The offense got on the boards the first drive of the scrimmage which starts on their 40. Senior Rusty Smith started the drive and was 2-for-2 connecting both times with fellow senior Cortez Gent, but it was redshirt sophomore Alfred Morris who capped the drive with a 15 yard score. On the day Smith was 12-7-1 for 75 yards.
The defense stopped the next two drives and saw the line’s pass rush help with a batted down ball by senior tackle Josh Savidge. Morris then rushed three times on the next drive, the final a 40 yard score.
Trailing 12-2 the defense closed the gap when junior tackle Dino Cox batted a pass, hauled it in and ran 59 yards for the score and to pull the defense within four.
Smith, who saw time against the ones and twos, stayed in for one more drive prior to giving way to David Kooi. Kooi faced the same and ended his day with 14-6-1 for 84 yards and a 36 yard touchdown connection to Grant Glover. Kooi closed out the half running 33 plays.
The second half started with Jeff Van Camp under center. Van Camp completed five of 10 passes for 65 yards but had a bit of bad luck with a penalty and a fumble following a long pass. Van Camp was relieved by Graham Wilbert who began three drives but saw his day end short with ominous weather approaching. The team took shelter for about 20 minutes, then return to the field where Van Camp lead the offense to its final score of the day.
The Owls will return to the practice field 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

30-18 at that point…DEFENSE…not what we expected??
Well, objectively, the first team O has not been on the field much…but, not taking anything away from the D either…they have two picks for TD's and a fumble recovery as well…

And it, and the drills he put JR DL Dino Cox through (#58 far right) last week, must have paid off…because he took a ball he tipped, and then caught, back for a TD:
