Bowl Outlook: UPDATED

Post

ACC
9 Bowl Tie-Ins + Possible National Championship Game (GT with lots of help)
6 Teams in, 2 teams cusp (FSU, DUKE).
Predict 8 teams in Bowls

Conclusion
There is no way that the ACC can fill the GMAC bowl (Mobile, AL) vs. a MAC team.  If Duke and FSU lose out then the ACC will also be unable to fill the Eagle Bank Bowl (DC) and the Emerald Bowl (San Francisco)

Root against FSU and Duke in order to open up ACC tie-ins for at-large teams.

BIG 12
8 Bowl Tie-ins + Possible National Championship Game (Texas)
7 Teams in, 3 teams cusp (KU, KSU, A&M), 1 team near elimination (Baylor)
Predict 8 teams in Bowls

Conclusion
BIG 12 should meet its bowl tie-in requirements, but might not fill the Texas Bowl if Texas goes to the National Championship Game.  Root against Kansas, Kansas State, Texas A&M, and Baylor.  Root for Texas to go to NC game.

Big East
6 Bowl Tie-ins + Possible National Championship Game (Cincy)
4 Teams in, 1 team cusp (USF), 1 team on the fence (UConn), 1 team near elimination (Louisville)
Predict 5 teams in Bowls

Concusion
If Cincy goes to the National Championship game, and Pittsburgh gets a BCS bid then the Big East will probably not fill the St. Pete bowl (Sun Belt alternate), or the PapaJohns Bowl (Sun Belt alternate).  Predict that Big East will not fill the St. Pete Bowl UNLESS USF declines the PapaJohns Bowl in favor of the St. Pete Bowl, in which case the PapaJohns Bowl will be left open.

Root against USF, UConn, and Louisville…in that order, and root for Cincy and Pitt in that order.

Big 10
7 Bowl tie-ins
7 Teams in, 1 team cusp (Michigan)
Predict 7 teams in Bowls

Conclusion
Big 10 will meet its requirements, but no more. Root against Michigan to prevent them taking an at-large bowl bid.

C-USA
5 Bowl tie-ins (also alternate for Eagles Bank Bowl)
4 Teams in, 3 teams cusp (ECU, UAB, Marshall), 1 team on the fence (Tulsa)
Predict 5 teams in Bowls

Conclusion
C-USA is having a good year, with a lot of teams looking to go bowling but only 2 more spots available.  They will likely fill their tie-ins and may provide at-large bowl eligible teams. Root against ECU, UAB, Marshall, and Tulsa, and for teams that are already in or out.

MAC
3 Bowl tie-ins
4 Teams in, 2 teams cusp (Bowling Green, Kent State), 1 team on the fence (Western Mich), 1 team near elimination (Toledo)
Predict 7 teams eligible for Bowls

Conclusion
MAC is having a strong year and may have 7 eligible.  As a non-BCS conference it is likely there will be some eligible that are left out.  Root against Bowling Green, Kent State, Western Michigan, and Toledo.

Mountain West
5 Bowl tie-ins + Possible BCS/National Championship Game
4 Teams in, 1 teams on the fence (Wyoming), 1 team near elimination (San Diego State)
Predict 5 teams in Bowls

Conclusion
If TCU wins out and receives a BCS berth, the Mountain West may not be able to fill the Humanitarian Bowl (Boise, ID), and if both San Diego State/Wyoming fail to become eligible then MWC won't fill one of the following: New Mexico Bowl (v. WAC) or the Armed Forces Bowl (v. CUSA).  Root for TCU to get a BCS bid and against Wyoming and San Diego State.

PAC10
6 Bowl tie-ins
6 Teams in, 1 teams on the fence (UCLA), 1 team near elimination (Arizona State)
Predict 7 teams in Bowls

Conclusion
The PAC10, though lacking any standout, will fill its bowl tie-ins.  Predict 7 teams to go to bowls, with UCLA as an at-large.  Root against ASU and UCLA to prevent at-large bids.

SEC
9 Bowl tie-ins + likely National Championship = 10
9 Teams in, 1 teams cusp (Tennessee), 1 team near elimination (Mississippi State)
Predict 10 teams in Bowls

Conclusion
The SEC will likely fill all 10 spots. Root against Tennessee and Mississippi State for the Sun Belt to have a shot at the PapaJohns bowl (v. Big East).

Sun Belt
1 Bowl tie-in (3 alternate)
3 Teams in, 1 team on the fence (ULL), 1 team near elimination (FAU)
Predict 3 teams eligible for Bowls

Conclusion
The Sun Belt has a very clear hierarchy of teams, but this could be a year in which the Sun Belt offers up 4 or even 5 bowl-eligible teams….most will likely sit at home however.  Since ULL and FAU have already played each other, root for both so that the Sun Belt can offer up 5 bowl eligible teams for the first time (and more eligible than ineligible), and/or root for those that are already eligible when possible in order to improve their records (and therefore chances of a bid).  Also, root for FIU to grab the biggest upset in history against Florida next week.

WAC
3 Bowl tie-ins + Possible BCS/National Championship Game
4 Teams in, 1 teams near elimination (Hawaii)
Predict 4 teams eligible for Bowls

Conclusion
If Boise State wins out and receives a BCS bid, then WAC simply fills its tie-ins.  Root against Hawaii to prevent an At-Large bid.

Independent
2 Teams in, 1 team near elimination (Army)
Predict 2 teams in Bowls

Conclusion
Root against Army to open up the Eagle Bank Bowl to an alternate.

Overall
68 Bowl Spots available
60 Bowl Eligible teams, 32 Teams out, 28 teams in the hunt
