Change to coaching Staff...Hoza is Let Go & Jared Allen Promoted.

FAU Football Enters 2010 with Staff Changes

As the Florida Atlantic University football team begins to prepare for its 2010 season, Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger has announced changes for the staff.

Darryl Jackson completed his first season as the Owls offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach. Jackson will continue to serve as the offensive coordinator and will take over the duties of quarterback coach vacated by Jeff Brohm, who has taken a similar position at the University of Illinois.

“We are sorry to lose Jeff from our staff. Jeff is like a son to me. He was a winning quarterback for me at the University of Louisville and did an outstanding job with our quarterbacks last year at FAU,” said Schnellenberger. “On the other hand, we are happy for him with this substantial upward move professionally and wish him all the success in the world.”

With Jackson working more closely with the quarterbacks and the overall offense, his duties with the wide receivers will be fulfilled by Jared Allen. Allen was in the Owls’ first signing class in 2000. He completed four seasons as a starter with an overall record of 26-20, and moved on to the NFL and NFL Europe. After a brief stint in corporate America, he returned to FAU as a graduate assistant for the 2009 season.

Defensively, FAU’s assistant head coach and linebackers coach Kurt Van Valkenburgh, who has been with the program since its inception, will move to defensive coordinator and will continue to work with the linebackers. Defensive coordinator Kirk Hoza will no longer be retained on the football staff. A search will begin immediately for a secondary coach.

The FAU football team finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 5-7 and tied for third in the Sun Belt Conference. Offensively, the Owls were ranked No. 22 nationally in offense and Alfred Morris ended the year atop the Sun Belt Conference in rushing, and ranked No. 15 nationally with 116 yards per game.

Re: Jared Allen promoted to WR coach

How can you have the subject "Jared Allen promoted to WR coach" when in the same story it says Hoza is gone.  To me that's the story, though it is buried in the release.  Van Valkenburgh has done an amazing job with the Special Teams.  Lets hope the defense doesn't follow suit.

Re: Chance to coaching Staff...Hoza is Gone.

Hoza is gone. We shouldn't be celebrating this, but hopefully it is a positive for the program. I hope he lands on his feet in a position that will provide well for him and his family.

We don't practice special teams so maybe we won't practice defense either lol. How do you make your first ever QB your WR coach? I understand Allen threw to the WRs when he was playing but what does a QB know about coaching WRs? So instead of just making Allen the QB coach and hiring a D-Coordinator they are going to hire a secondary coach? I don't get this move. I agree that we shouldn't have retained Hozza but what's next Rusty Smith coming back to coach the DB's?

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Upon further review it does seem a bit odd. I guess I overlooked the details after seeing that Hoza was gone. I don't know that moving coach Van to defensive coordinator does much good.

I am just happy Howard didn't accept the status quo.  We have budget constraints.  Very happy for them to try something different.

Sometime little changes have huge impacts…hopefully this is the case.

We have budget constraints.

All the heavy hitting budget wise was just shifted…

Now we have some $$$ freed up to hire the only spot available per the release:

Secondary coach.

Just like when Jackson was hired as the receivers Coach when we needed a lift there, they likely can now go after someone who is a "specialist" at corners, and safeties…

Lord knows we need that lifted! ;D

I am all for change.  Heck, where is Nick Paris.  Maybe he can coach up the secondary!

A very good move. There will be a much needed attitude adjustment and the team needed this. I am glad Coach S. made this hard decision but it was a must for the improvement of the program.
