Women's Hoops: Owl's Comeback Attempt Falls Short In 73-63 Loss To UALR

Brittany Bowe paces FAU with 18 points

The Florida Atlantic women’s basketball team all but erased a 17-point first half lead but could not get over the hill in a 73-63 loss to Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday night at FAU Arena.

The Owls (8-10, 4-4) trailed 39-22 with 3:13 remaining in the second half but went on a 9-1 run to make the deficit a manageable 40-31 heading into halftime.  FAU continued to put pressure on UALR in the second half, as a Lyrell Barfield three-pointer with 10:10 remaining pulled FAU within 53-51.  However that is as close as the Owls came as the Trojans (14-5, 6-1) closed the game on a 20-12 run and made clutch shots down the stretch to secure the victory.

First team All-Sun Belt selection Chastity Reed was in foul trouble most of the game and was held under her season average with just 17 points.  Reed, who played just 20 minutes due to the foul issues, averages 24.5 points per game this season, second most in the Sun Belt Conference.

“I admire what Arkansas-Little Rock does.  Coach Foley has those kids constantly doing exactly what he wants them to do,” said head coach Chancellor Dugan.  “They play tough and we didn’t do the things we needed to do on the kids we needed to guard.”

One of those kids was Britteni Williams, who scored a career-high 17 points and collected nine rebounds off the bench for the Trojans.

The Owls were led by Brittany Bowe, who led all scorers with 18 points.  The senior continued her strong play and made 6-of-13 shots from the field including a 6-of-7 performance from the free-throw line.

“We need to do a collectively better job of rebounding,” said Coach Dugan.  “It’s the posts, guards it’s all of us, we need to do a better job.”

FAU was outrebounded in the game 37-31 as UALR collected 15 offensive rebounds.

The Owls will look to snap a three-game losing streak this Saturday with a matchup against Arkansas St.  Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. from FAU Arena.
