Milestones Reached As FAU Upends Louisiana 84-75

Brittany Bowe and Carla Stubbs each surpass 1,000-point mark

The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team earned their third straight victory with a 84-75 win over Louisiana on Wednesday night at FAU Arena.  The win ensures the Owls of their highest win total since the 2005-06 campaign, a season that saw FAU compile 20 victories and clinch the program’s first ever berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Brittany Bowe and Carla Stubbs also had banner nights as the pair of seniors each surpassed the 1,000-point mark for their careers.  Bowe and Stubbs become the eighth and ninth players in women’s basketball history to achieve that plateau.

“It’s always nice to get individual achievements,” said Bowe.  “The most important thing about the game though is that we came away with the win.”

Bowe finished the game with 16 points and Stubbs chipped in with 15 to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.

The Owls (13-11, 9-5) started slow in the game and fell behind 12-5 early in the first half.  However a 17-4 run midway through the opening stanza gave the Owls a lead they would not surrender.

FAU held a 38-31 margin heading into halftime after Teri Stamps knocked down a three-point basket just before the buzzer sounded.

Stamps had another stellar offensive performance with a career-high 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting.  The sophomore also made a career-high five three-point field goals and added three assists.

In the second half, the Ragin’ Cajuns (8-17, 3-10) were unable to string together defensive stops and the FAU offensive was clicking as all five starters scored in double figures.

For Louisiana, Mercedes Johnson had the best game of her career and shredded the Owls’ defense for 39 points on 16-of-35 shooting.  The point total easily surpasses Johnson’s previous career-high of 22 and is the single-highest point total for any opposing player this season against FAU.

The Owls will get a much deserved week off before returning to action next Wednesday night in Miami against FIU.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at U.S. Century Bank Arena.
