Softball Drops Two in Extra Innings

Owls Fall to Kentucky and Maryland 2-1

Florida Atlantic University’s softball team dropped two games Friday night, both in extra innings, in the 2010 FAU Kick-off Classic featuring Pitt, Minnesota, Maryland, Kentucky and FAU.

The Owls played the final two games of the night first facing Kentucky. The two teams were scoreless through five innings with the Kats driving across the first run in the top of the six. FAU held Kentucky scoreless in the seventh and tied the outing in the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer by senior shortstop Blair Bodenmiller. The eighth opened under the international tie breaker rule with a runner placed on second. Kentucky scored the deciding run and held FAU scoreless in the bottom frame.

Rose Gressley pitched a complete game for the Owls. Gressley allowed five hits and saw two runs plated, both unearned. She struck out eight and did not allow a walk.

FAU returned to the field for the second game of the night versus Maryland to see another strong pitching performance, this time by senior Amber Barton. Barton pitched 7.2 innings, gave up two run, one earned and retired seven by strikeout.

Offensively, the Owls struck early with a run in the top of the second. Barton held Maryland scoreless through six and gave up the game-tying and go ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh and the eighth. The eighth was again played under the international tie breaker system.

Teams will be back on the field 9 a.m. Saturday with games scheduled for 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. FAU is scheduled to play the final two.

Have they won a game yet? This opening skid seems to be getting longer... wonder if they lost some of their best players.
