FAU Baseball Announces 2010 Signing Class

Nov. 19, 2009

BOCA RATON, FL (November 16, 2009) – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team announced the 2010 signing class with eight players to be added for the 2011 season.

“This recruiting class is full of winners,” said John McCormack, FAU baseball head coach. “Each player is of high character and talent and they are the future of this program.”

The class consists of four pitchers, one infielder and two utility players. Out of the eight signees, seven of them will be incoming freshman with one player transferring from junior college.

David Johannessen (Melbourne) is the most versatile of the group and can play catcher, outfielder or middle infield. Johannessen was a 2009 All-Cape Coast Conference selection at Melbourne High School.

Geoff Jimenez (Pembroke Pines) is the lone outfielder of the class. Jimenez batted .304 with 21 runs scored and 15 stolen bases last season at Flanagan High School.

The pitchers consist of three right-handers and one left-hander.

Jason Garcia (Land O’ Lakes) is a right-handed pitcher that went 8-3 with a 2.01 ERA and recorded 72 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched at Land O’ Lakes High School last spring. DRAFTED

Paul Davis (Port St. Lucie) is the lone junior college transfer in the class. The right-hander went 6-3 with a 4.26 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched last season for Pensacola Junior College. DRAFTED

Dalton Wentz (Brownsburg, Indiana) is the final right-hander in the class. Wentz went 7-0 with eight saves, 100 strikeouts and a 0.52 ERA in 50 innings pitched last spring for Brownsburg High School.

Bo Logan (Naples) is the lone left-handed pitcher in the class. Logan went 6-4 with 97 strikeouts and a 2.95 ERA in 64 innings pitched last season for Gulf Coast High School. Logan also played outfield at Gulf Coast and batted .387 with 21 RBI last spring.

Devon Workman (Clermont) played infield and outfield for East Ridge High School and batted .364 with two home runs and 23 RBI last season. Workman was an All Lake County Selection in 2009 in addition to being a varsity letterman all four years of his prep career.

Kevin Moesquit (Delray Beach) is the only true infielder in the class. Moesquit played shortstop at Highlands Christian High School last season and is originally from Curacao.

“I have seen each young man play and have been impressed not only by their physical tools but also the overwhelming desire to compete,” McCormack said. “These kids will be a welcomed addition to our program"

Gulf Coast's Logan decides on FAU

"In his first three seasons, pitcher Bo Logan already has set Gulf Coast records for career victories and strikeouts. All that’s left to earn is a state championship.

Logan received letters of interest from other NCAA Division I schools and had scholarship offers from two more. Last weekend, though, he made his choice official by verbally committing to the Owls.

'It feels really good,' Logan said of his choice. 'It gets a lot of stress off my back. I don’t have to worry about going around every weekend looking at teams.'

After being warmly welcomed by coaches and players during his visit, Logan said he picked FAU because he liked the team, the school and the area."

Looks like we landed a speedster…

Geoffrey Jimenez

"Geoff is a centerfielder that can track balls down. He's really grown in his four years here and he does a tremendous job on the bases," said Falcons coach Ray Evans . "He's a kid that will go through a wall for you."

And, now, an ACE!

Finally…this is what we have needed…….

Land O'Lakes ace Jason Garcia to sign with FAU

Jason Garcia was tabbed the new ace at Land O'Lakes after an eight-win season.

Florida Atlantic had been watching Garcia for two years, Gators coach Calvin Baisley said. Garcia visited Florida Atlantic over the summer and committed on the spot.

"They'd seen him throw a couple of times at Land O'Lakes and at several showcases," Baisley said. "They were first ones to call and he jumped on the opportunity. Since then there's been a lot of calls (from other colleges)."

As it would happen, others thought he was a good find as well…off to the Red Sox, in the 17th round, straight out of highschool…this obviously is not good timing considering there is two months to go before school starts and the recruiting pool is thin to say the least.

MLB should come up with a rule that says if you are not drafted in the first round, you cannot be drafted until you complete at least 2 years of college ball.  That protects the few young superstars that can actually earn big money, MLB could use the college system as their farm system, and kids could get some education.  These 17 year old kids think they are going to be rich and most will never see a MLB roster and then have no degree.  After 2 years in college, the kid could at least make a better decision on their future. I am against the college basketball rule of 1 year. Should be 2 years or none.  One and done is hurting the game IMO.

Re: Baseball announces 2010 recruiting class

Why should MLB change their rules?  The system works for them.  It only hurts college baseball, a sport that not many people care much about.  Sure it sucks that college teams lose some players, but that isn't MLB's concern.

Besides, it's not like college is going away.  If the kids who sign to play professionally can't make it, they can always go back and get a degree.
