FAU Men’s Basketball to Appear at Charity Event

Team Will Get Haircuts In Advance of Europe Trip

The Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team will make an appearance at the “Back to School Ballin’” Charity Event at The Spot Barbershop on Monday, August 9.

The FAU basketball team and Coach Mike Jarvis will also be talking with fans from 8-10 a.m. while getting hair cuts to prepare for an upcoming European tour.  Players can sharpen their skills at a free basketball clinic sponsored by Taylored Athletes of Boca Raton and receive pointers from area high school coaches and former pro players. Fans can register for prizes donated by local businesses, enter a raffle for a LeBron James basketball jersey, attend a pizza party, and compete against pro players in XBox 360 and PS3 tournaments.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Vitamin Angels (www.vitaminangels.org), an organization that seeks to reduce childhood mortality by distributing vitamins to children in underdeveloped parts of the world.

For more information, contact Pierre Tucker, former FAU basketball player and owner of The Spot at (561) 866-3241 or log on to www.thespotbarbershop.com

Update from the first day of the tour…

"The trip has been great so far, Amsterdam is a beautiful city. We did a boat tour today and visited the Anne Frank house. It has been a great experience for the entire team and we have learned a lot about the Netherlands and the history of Amsterdam. For example, Amsterdam has over 100 channels that were made to make trading goods easier. The Anne Frank house was very eye opening. It showed us that we must be open to other people’s nationality, religion, color, etc. It also showed us what can happen when people discriminate and how it affects people’s lives."

Update from the second day of the tour…

"We visited a cheese making and clog making village. It is not a museum, but an actual living village/town. It was about 20 minutes away from Amsterdam and is a very rural area. There were lots of cows, sheep and horses roaming the area. There were many channels that lined the farms. We found out that the citizens made them by hand in order to make the land suitable for living.

The Netherlands is a very beautiful country and the people are very innovative with the way they have reclaimed the land from water. It is very unique to see people living such a rural lifestyle so close to a major city like Amsterdam.

We had our first game of the trip against the Meppel Red Giants. We won 102-62 and we played very (well) for not touching a ball in a few days in addition to all the traveling we have done. It was a great start to the basketball portion of the trip."

Update from day three of the tour…

"We visited Brugge, Belgium today and it is a beautiful city. It has been influenced by many different cultures in its long history. The Dutch, French and Spanish have all at one time influenced the city and the country. Brugge is in northwest Belgium and was once the world’s chief commercial city and most of its business is based around the fact that it’s home to a huge commercial port.

We visited many churches and even saw The Basilica of the Holy Blood. The Basilica is a church that has received special ceremonial rites by the Pope. Belgium has 26 Basilicas, but the one in Brugge has a shroud that was once part of Jesus’ clothing. It was an amazing experience because many of us actually got to see the shroud. We also went and saw the only sculpture that Michelangelo made outside of Italy.

From here, we will travel to Ghent, Belgium which is about 45 minutes away."

Update from day four of the trip…

"We visited Ghent, Belgium today and it is a beautiful city. We went to a castle that dated back to the 1200’s and were told about the different torture techniques that were used. They included a guillotine with a bag that caught the head. They used a class system to determine the way people were executed. Richer victims had their heads cut off, while the poorer ones were simply hung.

From there, we went to a church that dates back to the 1500’s. It had a four-story ceiling and lots of beautiful artwork. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take any pictures inside the church. After the tour, we played Waregem in our second game of the trip. We ended up tying 64-64. You always to win, but coming to tie after being down by 18 in the first half says a lot about the team’s character.

It was a good way to end the day and we’re all looking forward to the rest of the trip."

Update from days five and six via Ray Taylor…

"We arrived in Paris on Tuesday and had a quiet day. Some of us walked around the area close to the hotel and all of us used the day to relax and catch up on some rest.

We took a bus tour of Paris and we took pictures in front of the Arc De Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. Paris is a cool city with a lot of history and a bunch of cool buildings. We played a game today vs. Cergy, which is about 10 minutes outside of the city. We won the game 78-54 even though they call traveling a little different here. I think we have improved a lot as a team, especially defensively and we get another chance to improve tomorrow night.

Everyone wants to say thank you to their families for their support. We love you guys and miss you guys a bunch!

Au Revoir"

Final update courtesy of Greg Gannt…

"On our last day of the trip, the coaches gave us most of the morning and afternoon to explore the city on their own. Many of us went to the Louvre, while the others went to some of the shops and other museums in the area.

We met up and as a group took a sunset riverboat tour of the city on the Seine River. It was interesting to see all the people eating wine and cheese on the riverbanks as we took the tour. This has been the trip of a lifetime and we have grown closer both on and off the court. We fly home (Saturday) and we can’t wait to get back home.

Thanks to all friends and family who supported us. We miss you guys and can’t wait to see you."
