Women's Soccer: Owls Drop Exhibition to FGCU 2-1

The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team had its first taste of competition in 2010, outshooting a quality Florida Gulf Coast University team in Thursday's exhibition match. The visiting Eagles outscored the Owls 2-1 in an 80-minute controlled match.

FAU will play another exhibition match on Saturday against New Jersey Institute of Technology, starting at 6 p.m. Then, the team will open the fall campaign at Stetson University on Friday, August 20 at 7 p.m.

The Owls tallied 13 shots in the exhibition, and got the lone goal from sophomore forward Allison Griffin in the 50th minute. Senior forward Laura Hyvonen recorded three shots and two shots were accounted by freshman Jesse Shugg and sophomore Kara Mundelein.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Lantes had a shutout in 20 minutes and stopped the only shot coming her way.

A total of 25 of the 32 FAU players saw action during the exhibition.

For Florida Gulf Coast, Jenci Villaverde scored the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute while Amanda Goble put the Eagles up 2-0 with a goal scored in the 48th minute. The visitors had eight shots with only five being on goal. FGCU went 11-5-3 last season to finish in second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Today's exhibition was two 40-minute halves that included a substitution period after twenty minutes. Official statistics were not kept.
