Jean and Lockley Awarded SBC Players of the Week Honors
============================================================
========================
Florida Atlantic University’s Lester Jean and Michael Lockley were recognized by the Sun Belt Conference Monday as the offensive player of the week and the special teams player of the week, respectively.
Jean, a senior leader, got the offensive game going versus UAB with a 25-yard score early in the second quarter, but it was the 77-yard catch that would make any highlight film. The 6-3 senior battled with his left hand and with his right hauled in a high in the air one-handed catch directly over the top of his head. He beat the defender for the score. It was the third time in his career to score two touchdowns in one game. The 77-yard score is the fourth longest catch in the program’s history and the third longest scoring TD. The most important part of his catch is that it gave life to a young offensive line that had been plagued with preseason injuries while trying to work as one. It allowed the Owls to believe they could be productive. FAU would use a third quarter interception return, a 43 yard reception and a 38 yard Alfred Morris run, as well as a blocked field goal attempt with no time on the clock to grab the 32-21 victory, but it was the leadership and efforts of Lester Jean that sparked the FAU team.
Lockley had an expected Michael Lockley performance with nearly double digit tackles, seven solo and one assist, including one tackle for a loss of five yards. He was all over the field shutting down the UAB offense when ever he could, but it was the seconds after the game clock had expired that he will forever be remembered. FAU had taken a 32-31 lead. UAB had the ball on their 20 with 2:20 remaining. Eight plays later, the Blazers were at the FAU 11 and were attempting a field goal with five seconds on the clock. The kick was up and so was Lockley who got enough of his hand on the ball to deflect its flight and give the Owls a 32-31 victory. The on field celebration began for the young Owls.
While Jean and Lockley received Sun Belt Conference praise, Jean and Brentley Harstad earned honorable mention honors by College Football Performance. Jean as a wide receiver and Harstad was honored as a defensive back and his 38-yard interception and return for a score.
