FAU part of Conference USA blues

Post

Mike Bianchi's blog in the Orlando Sentinel lamenting the stomping their division took Thursday night.

Ohio State stomps Marshall, South Carolina destroys Southern Miss: Conference USA embarrassed on opening night

Conference USA embarrassed itself on the opening night of college football season.

Ohio State clobbered Marshall 45-7 Thursday night and South Carolina put a humiliating 41-13 knot on the head of Southern Mississippi.

And we won’t even discuss UAB’s 32-31 loss to Florida Atlantic, a mediocre team from the Sun Belt Conference, Thursday night.

Awful.

What made it even more awful was unranked South Carolina destroying Southern Miss even when the Gamecocks had three starters missing because of eligibility issues. Yes, this is the same Southern Miss that is one of the trendy picks to win Conference USA this year.

UCF coach George O’Leary has said for years that if Conference USA teams want to start earning respect, they can’t just play opponents from BCS leagues, they need to start winning some of those games.

“It’s not just good enough to play people (in BCS leagues),” O’Leary said recently. “It’s winning. That’s what catches people’s attention.”

And what doesn’t catch people’s attention is getting beaten like Ricky Ricardo’s conga drum. Did you watch the games Thursday night? Conference USA looked more like Conference Liechtenstein. On a night when the league needed to come up big, it came up amazingly small.

After posting a miserable 4-24 record against BCS competition last year, Conference USA’s unofficial mantra during the offseason was that the league would get better against the big boys this year.

After one night of college football, it looks more like the league is weaker than ever.

Can you say major a-hole?  Articles like this make it easy to hate on UCF.  Sorry, not everyone in the C-USA can open up against South Dakota.

Re: FAU part of Conference USA blues

Does anyone know what the Sunbelt vs. Conference USA record is for the last  5 years or so,  I believe it is pretty strong.

GO OWLS!

Ignore that BS! C-USA isnt much better than the Belt anymore. The Gap is closing quickly....If they didnt have East Carolina they would be pretty much equal to us.

East Carolina barely beat conference opponent Tulsa in a game that was 51-49!

Re: FAU part of Conference USA blues

Well they talk about UAB like they are some power house CUSA team! If UAB was in the SBC it would be a middle of the pack team even. UAB hasnt been to a bowl in atleast the last 10 years. Even right now there is an article in the Birmingham News about UAB and weather or not they should drop out of college football...

Re: FAU part of Conference USA blues

Mike Bianchi does not represent CUSA or UCF, if you knew anything about Orlando Sentinel you would know it is all GATOR so don't hate of CUSA or UCF.  UAB is a weak CUSA team but many thought they should of beaten FAU (on paper mind you) FAU was predicted to be about the middle of pack this year, so  it is good for SBC that they won that game.

Agreed, it's nonsensical to bag on UCF because of Bianchi.

FAU part of Conference USA blues

Bianchi is a tiny little man with a big mouth.  Anything he writes can pretty much be written off as crap before ever reading it.  Yes, the Slantinel is all gators, but Bianchi is all UCF.  Thats fine, and it's great to have a writer who roots for the local team, but the problem is when UCF gets blown out 54-0 and he still mouths off about why UCF and CUSA is the best, and the gators are too scared to play them.

Hell, I know a lot of UCF fans that would rather not have him on their side.

Regardless though, I figured this game would have layed out our season for us.  IF we would have lost, I think we would have had a LONG Season and probably get 3-4 wins, if were lucky.  But, I figured if we can beat a team like UAB, we have a legitimate shot at a winning season.  Lets hope I'm right .  GO OWLS!

FAU - We got Bowls!

Re: FAU part of Conference USA blues

You do know how terrible UAB is.  Without Webb, they have no offense.  UAB basically exposed how your defense still has not improved.  UAB has no defense and a terrible offense.  If your coach was smart, he would pull your most important starters for the michigan game.  No need to risk hurting them in a non-conf game.
