Christina Wallinger had a double-double (10 kills, 14 digs) in the Florida Atlantic University volleyball team’s 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-16) win over Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night. It was the Owls’ second win of the season over their in-state rivals, they swept FGCU at the Eagles’ season opening tournament.

The 14 digs are a career-high for Wallinger, she tied her previous career high of 13, in the first win over the Eagles. The first set was close throughout as neither team could build a lead larger than three points in the early going. The Eagles led by one, 19-18 when they went on a 6-0 run to take the first set. FAU took control early in the second set, taking a 14-7 lead. FGCU pulled to within three at 15-12 when the Owls scored eight of the next 11 points and lead 23-15. Three straight FAU attack errors seemed to give the Eagles hope, but they responded with two of their own to tie the match.

The third set was a replay of the first with neither team able to seize control. The score was level at 17 when Kristyna Dzmuranova had two of her 10 kills and one of her career-high tying seven blocks to help the Owls win the set 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead. Set number four started with FAU quickly racing out to a 7-2 lead, followed by the Eagles rallying to pull within one at 8-7. The Owls again surged out a healthy lead, this time at 14-9. FGCU again narrowed the margin to one, 15-14. Wallinger and Anne Vaughan then combined for six kills and a block, before a Cintia Nightingale ace finally put the match away.

FAU (8-7) will open Sun Belt play on Friday night at 6:30 when they host North Texas.
