FAU to experiment with using the Gulf Stream to generate power

Florida Atlantic University has applied for federal permission to suspend turbines in the Gulf Stream to see whether the powerful ocean current could be used to generate electricity.

"Because seawater is about 850 times more dense than air, a two meter per second oceanic flow, typical of the fastest parts of the Florida Current, has the power density of a gale-force wind," wrote the FAU center's scientific director, Howard Hanson, in a recent article in the journal Sea Technology.

Re: FAU to experiment with using the Gulf Stream to generate power

This could be a really cool project and south florida is in a perfect place for it.  I'm not sure turbines are the way to go, but finding a way to successfully and economically harness the gulf stream's power could be a huge discovery.  But we have to do it in a way that it does not disrupt the current too much.

Besides, they'll be a hell of a fish attractor throught the entire water column.
