NOTES & PHOTOS: 2011 Preseason Scrimmage II - 08-20-11

Post

Another day, another struggle for the offense until it seemed the coaching staff held the dogs back; which allowed for some closing of the gap in the second half.

More fumbles under center, but not so many high snaps. So, at least part of the issue has been remedied it appears.

But, the defense was applying consistent pressure and that disrupted things enough to warrant pick-offs four times. Of course this comes on the heels of last week's five pick performance.

"If you're a defensive football guy it would have been very very intriguing. Being the head coach of the offense and the defense it is bittersweet", said Howard Schnellenberger. "The defense is playing maybe as tough and hard nosed of football as we've played here (at FAU). We're developing more players each day."

But he could not paint such a pretty picture about the current state of the unit in charge of moving the ball down the field.

"The offense continues to shoot themselves in the foot by not being able to do the basic fundamentals of getting the ball back to the quarterback."

Schnellenberger said they will dive into the film heavy tomorrow morning to see if they can figure how to get an "offense that is going to be competitive enough to win."

How's that for motivation?

The QB race has hit a stall with no clear front runner. And Schnellenberger stopped shy of saying that one would be announced 10 days before the game. But he did say he didn't want to announce one today. Don't blame him.

On the other side of the ball, the new 3-4 scheme appears to be paying off nicely, and one has to wonder why it took the team so long to move to it in the first place?

Anyway, on to the photos…

The QB race didn't enjoy much separation from the front runners…no fireworks from the back-ups either as speculated fourth team QB Stephen Curtis (pictured below) finished out the day 1-of-6 for 8 yards…Nick Bracewell was 2-of-5 for 10 yards.

One of the reasons for the lack of distance is interceptions, with three of them from suspected front runner Graham Wilbert. Aside from that, a pretty respectable 10-of-16, 2 TD performance.
