Re: Game Week Thread: FAU @ ULL - 10/01/11 @ 7:00 p.m.

The Owls kick-off the Sun Belt conference portion of 2011's slate in a familiar place. FAU has visited Cajun Field on three prior occasions since 2005 and have found success there, sporting a perfect overall mark of 3-0.

Their last stop in Lafayette in 2009 was one to be remembered, as Florida Atlantic romped its way to a 51-29 victory behind 624 total yards and an 18-of-28, 359 yard performance, from all time passing leader Rusty Smith. Alfred Morris also broke away for a hefty 181 yards on the ground.

Last year at Lockhart the Owls snuck away with a slim 24-23 win as the Cajuns surprisingly decided to go for a two point conversion while needing only one to tie with just under 2:00 remaining; a decision that likely played its way into the hands of the firing of once Head Coach Rickey Bustle, whose squad went on to an underachieving 3-9 mark for the year.

Fast forward to now, and both squads are reeling off successful outings from last Saturday.

ULL knocked off league leader FIU in Miami, and at 3-1 and is making early prognostications by SBC coaches pegging them next to last place look pretty silly.

The Owls had a stellar showing at Auburn in comparison to the two previous games, setting season highs in just about every offensive category and holding the Tigers to a season low in yardage on the other side of the ball. There were multiple flashes of success, and also some bumps in the road to the tune of three INT's.

This match-up should be a good one and it will be interesting to see how well the Cajuns can move the ball given FAU's new 3-4 and how well they have implemented it thus far:

Great writeup Rick. Love the stats comparison. Looks like ESPN3 will cover the game too, according to the website. Shaping up to be a great game...Go Owls!

Cautiously optimistic about this game now. Don't want to get too confident after Auburn.

Stats look very similar on paper… we could definitely pull this out. We need the W.

And five more, really. But one thing at a time.

Cajuns QB Blaine Gautier tapped as Sun Belt offensive player of the week on the heels of ULL's win over the Panthers:

Making just his fourth career start, led the Cajuns to a stunning 36-31 upset at FIU…Gautier guided the team to a season-high 419 yards of total offense and did not commit a turnover…He totaled 307 yards (221 pass/86 rush) and tossed three touchdown passes to lead the offense…Gautier was not sacked, averaging 5.7 yards-per-rush, and made one of the biggest plays in the game…With 50 seconds remaining in the first half, the Cajuns offense lined-up for a fourth-and-one attempt at the FIU 41-yard line…Everyone in the stadium looked for a run, but Gautier sold the play-action to perfection and hit a wide-open Ladarius Green with the touchdown…The score pushed the Cajuns one-point lead up to eight…Gautier’s 46-yard touchdown strike to Javone Lawson early in the fourth quarter gave the Cajuns a 12-point cushion.

Re: Game Week Thread: FAU @ ULL - 10/01/11 @ 7:00 p.m.

Cajuns' Coach Mark Hudspeth is calling all Cajun fans to make thier way to into the game on Saturday, or jokes he may go out and bring them in himself…this is definitely something we have seen at LockFart over the years…folks want to stand around and drink, and over look the game itself!

Think he has a valid point…you can go to a bar and do that and its disrespectful to the team:

"Sold-out, better-not-be-an-empty-seat-on-the-grass-hill." "If it is (not full), I'm walking through the tailgate area, personally, during the first quarter, and I'm gonna leave (offensive coordinator) Jay Johnson in charge of the team, and I'm gonna drag everybody into that stadium."

Hudspeth has task for fans

That's the great thing about our new stadium, we can sit at the bar (priority & premier) and still watch the game…sweeeet!

GO OWLS!
