Re: Game Week Thread: ASU @ FAU - 11/05/11 @ 4:00 p.m.

Things had certainly changed offensively since the first ever meeting between the Owls and the Red Wolves (formerly known as the Indians) which resulted in the infamous 0-0 tie at the end of regulation, and an eventual 3-0 win for ASU in OT.

There have since been some solid showings in the series by both squads, although not sure that will be the case on Saturday for Florida Atlantic who has circled back to rock bottom again and is currently in the basement amongst the 120 DI teams.

Also not so sure about the current "fun stat" of the home team winning on each occasion remaining in place.

But it is Home Coming Week after all, and they will have had a full two weeks to prepare. So we will keep our fingers crossed for a "surprise" when the Owls have the pigskin in hand. There will not be one at the QB spot however, as Graham Wilbert gets the nod once again.

Last time on the turf in Jonesboro FAU let a 16-9 lead in the fourth period get away as the Red Wolves scored 28 points to seal a 37-16 win. Penalties were also a problem to the tune of 14 for 142 yards. On a lighter note, once Owl game announcer Dave LaMont provided an entertaining "rant" to tickle the ear.

LaMont is off to greener pastures these days with national broadcasts, and the Owls will need to find someone new to complain should a helmet to helmet occur.

As for now, Arkansas State had quite a day on Saturday putting up a 540 yard display with the ball. QB Ryan Aplin has now gone for over 300 yards of total offense for the 5th time this year, and the Red Wolves became Bowl Eligible in the process.

"I thought the game plan our coaches had was really well put together and I thought the intensity our kids brought in the first half was phenomenal in all three phases", said Head Coach Hugh Freeze. "I thought our cover teams were excellent, I thought our defense was really, really good and I thought the offense was pretty solid too."

At 4-0 in conference play ASU is also off to their best league start since the 1986 season.

Moving on to the Owls, the Alfred Morris 2011 1000 Yard Watch shows that he still needs 459 more. Which may not be a given as there are just five games remaining and a 77.4 YPG average thus far. And it may be tough day once again for the senior on Saturday considering that Arkansas State has not allowed a 100+ yard performance by any single back they have faced. But more importantly for the record books, he needs just 185 to become the Owls' All-Time leading rusher (3069 Charles Pierre).

The defense will have their hands full in dealing with the frantic pace of ASU's offense and must establish three and outs early to keep stride given the inability to match consistent production. Staying on the field for long periods in this contest could be a recipe for disaster.

Here's our weekly number crunch:

No surprise coming out of the Land of Sin regarding confidence towards Florida Atlantic, who currently finds themselves +17 point underdogs.

Of note:

That is very likely the most ever versus a conference opponent at home.

Game Week Thread: ASU @ FAU - 11/05/11 @ 4:00 p.m.

Our 3rd down conversion rate of 24% is BEYOND scary.

In fact its downright criminal. Our O CANNOT move the chains and its taken its toll on the D.

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick @$$ and I'm out of bubble gum.

Re: Game Week Thread: ASU @ FAU - 11/05/11 @ 4:00 p.m.

Long yardage 3rd down attempts AND Horrible play calling on 3rd & short will do that.

Why is it that we cannot bring in an impact receiver early in their careers with this O. Does our "pro" sytem make it too difficult to learn (YES!) and why? Simply a game of throw and catch after running a patten , like they have been doing since they were kid's in the park or street. That is why the spread O is so easy to install most places. that and you don't need a great big O line to pass (or run) in the spread. Just quick timing patterns - like MTSU and EVERY OTHER spread O has done to us the past four (4) years!
I love Howard but his stubbornness of sticking with the "pro style O" to develop them for the pros has only gotten two (2) drafted in ten (10) years - not a good report card. Frickin Abilene Christian has that many players dratfed almost every year lately.

Come on 2012! But win a few this year guys (and Coaches if you give a **** still)!

So if we win this weekend can we consider this one of the biggest upsets in FAU history next to Hawaii and Troy? lol

Yup! And we gotta admit this is a huge trap game for ASU as they have had a great season, we have not :P, we had the week off to rest/heal and "prepare", and it is at home.

Go Owls, bring home that 1st home stadium win!

This just in:

OL Max Karrick has played his last down as an Owl…

“He’s been trying to play the best he can for more than one year and he’s progressively gotten worse and he’s progressively becoming more ineffective,” coach Howard Schnellenberger said.

“It’s come to a point where he and his parents and his doctors feel it’s in his best interest and probably in the team’s best interest that he gets himself well and go on with his life.”

Wilbert and Kooi again.

Can we just forfeit instead?

We'll tailgate, go inside, cross the field, shake their hands and say, "We'll just give you this one. Don't want to ruin our Homecoming with another embarrassment. But hey, thanks for coming and help yourself to some punch and pie before you leave - we have plenty."
