Re: Shula Bowl X Game Week Thread: FAU @ FIU - 11/12/11 @ 6:00 p.m.
The Owls and Panthers will face off in what is already Shula Bowl X this Saturday, with Florida Atlantic looking to keep a five game win streak therein alive.
Both teams likely have pent energy to spend as FIU saw becoming bowl eligible early dashed by WKU's last second 34 yard FG yesterday, and the Owls tossed away a lead against the hottest squad in the league.
Fittingly, now's the time in the 2011 FAU football schedule when one should consider wiping away everything that has happened until this point. Besides, without rehashing the turnover cataclysm that has become the fate of the Owls as of late, there were some positive signs from Saturday's 39-21 loss to the Red Wolves which could produce the Hope to do so.
QB Graham Wilbert finally threw some very well placed balls, one of which actually had FAU on top of the Red Wolves and probably sent thoughts of a possible upset through their minds.
"We had a lead in the third quarter, which was quite an accomplishment", said Coach Howard Schnellenberger. "If he (Wilbert) continues to improve we will get closer and we will win some football games."
Alfred Morris also got some much needed hole support from a struggling offensive line to the tune of 163 yards, and now needs just 295 more to hit the 1000 mark for 2011.
"When you can give a good runner the ball 10-15 times a game, generally his strength and his running ability takes over and he makes some major runs", Schnellenberger said. "It's just the offense and the defense giving him the ability to handle the ball more."
Last season at Lockhart Stadium FAU walked away with a 21-9 win despite the Panthers posting 360 yards of offense. Helping matters was a 4-2 turnover advantage. That must remain in tact for a chance this weekend. The one-two punch of Morris and Willie Floyd accounted for 189 yards by foot; which may be a stretch as a sequel given Floyd's inability to produce a break away performance as of yet this year.
Not going to punch the stats timecard this go round except for what is below for illustrative purposes, and just offer that this match-up is all about getting a much needed win, and getting it against your most disliked foe.
Aside from Hilton, the Panthers do not have the offensive team speed that ASU has, and that should help matters defensively.
As for "confidence" with dollars behind it, FAU once again opens at the underdog spot, being allowed +18.5 points.
We'll see if that holds up when the final score is registered.

Panther TY Hilton has been invited to the 2012 Under Amour Senior Bowl to be held in Mobile, AL.
Think the Owls will get any nods??
If so, Morris, Cyrille, and Givens are the likely choices, IMO…….

Someone needs to step up in that locker room and lay down the law! Nothing against Howard, I don't care if this is his last game at FIU, Howard Shmoward! Even though we lost they did play better this past Saturday. Let's pull out all the stops, all the tricks in the book, anything we can. If we can keep them at 5 wins and only manage to win 1 game this season it HAS to be against them!
Forget UCF, forget USF, there's not one team I HATE more in college football than FIU! Hilton is slowed by an injury, there's no doubt he's explosive and their best player if we can stop him we can stop them!
Sorry for all the exclamation points lol, I'm very passionate about beating FIU
My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

If you want to win a game, this is the one you MUST win. You lost the stadium opener? well, make up for that game and problem solved.
I heard some recruits will be attending this game, so show up, be creative and finish strong.
BTW, what time does the game start?
GO OWLS!
