The series

12/18/90 A L 72-80
11/21/09 A W 81-69
11/20/10 H L 82-72

American enjoys a 2-1 lead in the short three game series. Last year in Boca Raton, AU downed the Owls 82-72. After the Eagles jumped out to a 47-30 half time lead FAU would make a charge in the second frame outscoring AU 42-35. But a comeback was not to be had as American owned a commanding 38-22 advantage off the glass and shot a respectable 41.7% from long distance.

Florida Atlantic placed four players in double figures in Gantt (18), Tucker (14), White (13), and Royster (10).

FAU at a Glance

Fresh off a three game season opening tournament on the west coast, the Owls head to the east coast with a 84-77 win under belt courtesy of Georgia State. But they dropped a "should have been a win" contest to Portland 70-65, and were competitive in a 77-71 loss against host Washington - playing them closer than anyone else did.

"I can see why Florida Atlantic was picked to win their league, they’re a really solid basketball team", said Huskies Head Coach Lorenzo Romar.

Ray Taylor didn't necessarily have the showing of his life at 5-of-25 during the three game stint, but priorities have just shifted for him. While a freshman, and given overall team talent, scoring was required from the Owls' primary floor general. Now that others have arrived with that specialty, his focus will need to shift to dishing the rock and taking shots only when they are opportune.

Those still lamenting the departure of Brett Royster can find solace now. Florida Atlantic's block tally after the first three games last season was 11. This year it's almost doubled to the tune of 21. In fact the Owls are currently tied for 23rd nationally in swats per outing. Sounds like things will be just fine in that category moving forward.

Part of the reason for that is the insertion of freshman forward Kelvin Penn into the line-up. Penn has made an immediate impact in the front court in both blocks (2.7 pg) and rebounds (4.3 pg), and is already earning the praises of Jarvis.

"I've been pleased with Kelvin - period", said Jarvis. "He brings effort and attitude to the table every time he steps on the court. He'll play a lot this year."

After last nights 15-of-25 performance against GSU to add some weighting, FAU is also in the top 20% of the nation in three point percentage coming into the contest at 41.7% from behind the arc.

The Owls will be playing their fourth game in five days, but should be well rested for the Eagles on Wednesday.

"Some of these guys have gotten more rest on this trip (to Seattle) than they've gotten at home", Jarvis said.

American at a Glance

The Eagles had a successful campaign in 2010-11, finishing up at 22-9 overall and 11-3 in the Patriot League. A huge part of that was the productive tandem of Vlad Moldoveanu (20.4 ppg and 6.4 rpg) and Stephen Lumpkins (13.5 ppg, 8.3 rpg). Unfortunately for AU, they are both gone and with them left 51% of total the squad's offensive output. So far they are not the same without them, having gotten off to a 0-2 start with losses to both Richmond (66-56) and Maryland Eastern Shore (64-62 OT).

In an attempt to fill the void, senior F Charles Hinkle has received the nod in the front court while leading returner Tony Brewer is pacing matters in the back. Hinkle has taken almost 30% of the team's total shot attempts, and Brewer is currently the best long ball threat at 9-of-18 (50%) on the young season.

While never finishing outside of the top four in the Patriot League since joining in 2001, being tabbed fifth in the conference's 2011-12 preseason poll presents a disappointing possibility for the Eagles.

Latest Line:

TBA

Owl's Nest Prediction

FAU should have an easier time this year against the Eagles. A front court advantage when the final horn sounds is not out of the question, and overall guard play goes FAU's way.

However, remaining patient on defense is key to victory as American will use a deliberate passing strategy to create their opportunities while looking to keep the pace slow overall.
