Assistant Coaches Carl Pelini Could Hire

Post

This all just my speculation but now that we know who the head coach is going to be, maybe we can start looking at assistant coaches that he will bring in. I listed some guys that I found had ties with Pelini, maybe we can keep this a running thread.

Turner Gill Former Kansas Head Coach- I know most people are saying this has to be a joke, but the fact is Pelini is a defensive minded coach and will need someone to run his offense. Gill was recently dismissed from Kansas after he went 5-19 in two seasons. Before Kansas, he was the head coach at Buffalo and also spent 14-years as an assistant at Nebraska. Gill and Pelini coached together at Nebraska in 2003.

Recruiting ties: He pulled three kids out of the state of Florida while at Kansas and nit-picked the area with Buffalo. Also prominent in the Midwest, Kansas to Texas.

Ross Els Nebraska Linebacker Coach- Coached the Huskers linebackers for one season under Pelini’s defense, producing the Big 10 Conference’s Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year in Lavonte David. Before his stint with Nebraska, Els coached with Pelini at the University of Ohio and was also the defensive coordinator at New Mexico State.

Recruiting ties: The Eastern seaboard, Washington, D.C. to Pennsylvania.

Ted Gilmore USC Wide Receivers Coach- Gilmore worked at Nebraska under Bo Pelini as the wide receivers coach for three seasons before a decision was made to overhaul the offensive staff. Gilmore landed on his feat at USC and found instant success. Two of his wide receivers, one a true freshman, combined for over 2,400-yards and 26 TDs. Gilmore is a long shot to land on this staff, but in all of years of coaching he hasn’t been given the opportunity told hold the title of offensive coordinator.

Recruiting ties: Landed a receiver from the Central Florida area while with Nebraska and targeted a few others. Has been seen across the nation in Colorado, Arizona, California and Kansas.

Dwayne Dixon Ohio Wide Receivers Coach- a University of Florida graduate, Dixon played for the Gators for three seasons before a brief NFL stint. After hanging up the pads, he joined Steve Spurrier’s staff as the wide receivers coach and held the position for 10-years. Following that, Dixon coached at NC State before landing at Ohio in 2007. Dixon coached with Pelini for one year in Athens. Some Gator fans wanted Dixon to come back and coach receivers on Will Muschamp’s new staff.

Recruiting ties: Florida.  Dixon has tons of ties to the state. At NC State he landed five players from the sunshine state in one season and also brought in All-American linebacker Nate Irving. While at Ohio he has kept the connection strong and already has helped the Bobcats land a duo of 3-star players from the Tampa area.

Re: Assistant Coaches Carl Pelini Could Hire

Because of the peanut offers we have after HC, the Gillmore and Gil chances are slim to none with slim already on the way out of town.

Gilmore was making $130K at NU before heading west to USC. Sure he only went up from there…

Otherwise they make complete sense in theory!

Gill will also be making $3 mill from his buyout over the next few years. It's pretty common for coaches like him to join other program's staffs after they have been fired.

Please provide examples of fired head coaches taking an OC/DC or any other assistant position after they were terminated in recent history?

I would argue your example is more for the pro game than college.
