The series:
12/10/09 H W 106-99 (3OT)
11/17/10 H W 88-58
The two teams have faced off twice previously, with lopsided results despite Florida Atlantic remaining the victor. The Owls needed triple overtime to finish off the Royals in their first meeting, but took solid care of matters the second time around in blowout fashion 88-58 at FAU Arena. Greg Gantt and Dennis Mavin swapped scoring roles in the periods, with Gantt registering 14 of his 20 points in the first half and Mavin tallying 10 of his 14 points on the night in the second. The Owls were dominant off the glass at 41-24, while forcing 20 Royals turnovers.
Warner Southern at a Glance:
The Royals have been ranked as high as 10th nationally amongst NAIA DII programs, but fell to 17th after a 93-72 loss to Southeastern University back on November 30th. Most recently, they used a 52.5% showing from the floor to slide past a pesky Johnson & Wales squad 98-93.
Big man Malcolm Campbell, who takes up some serious space in the paint at 6-10, 278 lbs, received his second Sun Conference player of this week nod after posting a 20 point & 14 rebound average in Warner's first two league contests.
In the back court, the guard tandem of starter Ian Wilhelm and reserve Bryce Kachinski (15.3 ppg) represent the Royal's long ball threat having connected on 24-of-64 attempts (37.5%) collectively for the year.
Warner Southern is undefeated at home, and 2-2 away from Lake Wales. Primarily a second half performer, they note an average scoring differential of +3.5 points in the latter frame.
Sun Conference coaches tabbed the Royals to finish 3rd in the league's preseason polling behind Northwood University and Embry-Riddle respectively.
FAU at a Glance:
If it seems like it's been quite some time since you've seen the Owls play in person, that's because it has. With only two games at home in December, Florida Atlantic welcomes the Royals for the third straight season, while seeing the end to a 10 day stint away from contest action.
Last time on the floor back on November 30th, Pablo Bertone notched his first career double-double with a 17 point, 12 rebound performance against Kansas; although the Owls had a tough time matching up inside in a 77-54 loss to the Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse.
KU was all over the boards (53-32), and swatted 13 FAU attempts as well. Not helping matters were 10 turnovers on the night, dropping the Owls to 0-3 on the year with that many or more giveaways.
"The guy's didn't play smart, missed too many free throws and layups", said Coach Mike Jarvis on the loss. "But I think this will help us, we'll grow from it."
He has a point about the charity stripe, as the Owls' current 59.7% connection rate places them dead last in the Sun Belt and a lugubrious 308th nationally. With league action set to begin on New Year's eve against Louisiana-Lafayette, that's a trend that must change quickly.
Warner should provide an opportunity to begin the process, along with a final tune-up for what lies waiting in a three game stint away from FAU Arena against formidable foes Mississippi State, Miami, and Harvard.
However, Jarvis was careful to note at Friday's practice that the Royals are an improved squad with the addition of 6-9 transfer Brian De Leon, while also eluding to the fact that the Owls will need to be up for the challenge as they are averaging 93 points per contest.
Latest Line:
NA
Owl's Nest Prediction
Campbell appears to have elevated his game somewhat for the Royals since last year's meeting when he managed only 7 points and 3 rebounds. But he should once again be held to modest gains underneath the basket provided the Owls stay attentive when the rock is tossed inside to him.
Have said it before, and will say it again: NAIA squads have talented players due to different recruiting requirements. Accordingly, the Owls can not look past Warner. Being hungry for a win, believe they will rise to the challenge.
