The Owls will begin the season on the road for just the first time since 2003.
And there will be a new looks all around for both the starting rotation as well as infield. With RH Paul Davis moving on to the minors, and returner RH R.J. Alvarez assuming a middle reliever position and possibly closing role at times, things opened up for Jake Meiers to take on the 2 spot. Meiers posted wins wins over nationally ranked Miami and in-state rival UCF in 2011. For day three it will be JUCO transfer RH Jeremy Strawn.
Around the diamond, the team has tough shoes to fill with 2B Raymond Church, SS Nick Delguidice, and 1B Dan Scheffler all departing. McCormack will likely look to Mike Albaladejo to transition from catcher to 2B, while allowing the insertion of Mike Spano behind the plate primarily for offensive bolstering. Freshman Mitch Morales will be at SS for Florida Atlantic, with returner Mark Nelson moving to 1B, and JUCO transfer Kyle Newton standing in at 3B.
In the outfield, leading hitter Alex Hudak will be looked upon to anchor the offense. The senior led the conference last season with a tidy .360 batting average. Sophomore Geoff Jiminez will be inserted to offset the loss of Andy Mee in RF.
FAU’s next win will place John McCormack at the 100 mark as a skipper.
The Owls have fared will at Sewell-Thomas Stadium, winning arguably their biggest game as a program in 2002 when they upset Alabama to earn an appearance in their only Super Regional birth to date.
The Crimson Tide offer an experienced group around the horn, but will be inserting two freshman into starting roles on the mound.
Here's what Alabama Head Coach Mitch Gaspard Had to Say About FAU.
