The Owls begin the Sun Belt portion of the 2012 schedule hoping to avenge a late 2011 season series loss to the Panthers 1-2 (7-9, 2-0, 3-7).

RHP Kevin Alexander (2-0, 1S) moves into the number two spot on the mound in favor of Bo Logan for his first weekend start. Alexander has a 2-0 mark in 2012 and boasts a 1.56 ERA, giving up 18 hits and 3ER in 17 1/3 innings of work while striking out 17. It will be his first start since 2010 after sitting out last year due to injury.

Florida Atlantic is getting solid run production late in games, having scored 26 runs in the eighth inning this season. The tally accounts for 23% of all scoring (115).

Part of that is due to 3B Kyle Newton who has three long balls for 2nd on the squad. Newton has improved at the plate as of late after going 7-for-12 in last weekend’s series against Rutgers upping his average to .329 on the season. He leads the team with 19 RBI.

With 16 home runs on the year and 37 contests left to play, the Owls are on pace to handily eclipse last year's tally of 35 over the wall blasts.

FIU is coming off a 1-1 midweek series split against A-SUN opponent North Florida. The Panthers won Tuesday's meeting 6-4, but fell 10-8 Wednesday after giving up a 7-2 lead through three complete.

SR INF Mike Martinez has pounded his way to a .488 average on the year for Florida International, good enough for the top spot in the Sun Belt. The team has four players hitting .300 or better on the year.

The Panthers currently afford the 2nd best team ERA in the Belt (3.63), with the Owls coming in 8th (4.56).

FAU Head Coach John McCormack is 8-7 against the neighbor to the south since taking the helm.

The Owls took game one from Florida International 5-1 on Friday night in a contest that remained scoreless through four complete innings.

But Florida Atlantic (12-7, 1-0) got to Panther starting hurler Mason McVay in the 5th inning when Corey Keller (photo) connected for his third homer on the season to notch the game’s first score.

FAU would add two more in their next at bat as a wild pitch allowed Mitch Morales (3-of-4) to cross the plate before Mark Nelson’s SAC fly to left plated Geoff Jimenez, giving the Owls a 3-0 lead.

FIU (8-8, 0-1) threatened in the 7th, placing two on base with two outs, but Garton enticed a fly ball to retire the side.

R.J. Alvarez took the hill for Garton in the bottom of the 8th; striking out the first three batters he faced on just 10 pitches.

Two insurance runs would be on tap for Florida Atlantic in the top of the 9th as Dylan Siegel touched home plate for his first career run thanks to a fielder’s choice, and Mike Albaladejo (2-of-4, 1RBI) singled to bring in Jimenez.

The Panthers only run of the evening came in the 9th off Alvarez (S), a two out shot over the wall to right.

Ryan Garton (4-1) went seven shutout innings to earn the win, giving up just four hits and striking out eight.
