Game Thread: #17 Central Florida vs FAU - Mar 27th, 2012 @ 6:30 PM

What:      Central Florida (19-6) at Florida Atlantic (16-9)

When:      Tues, Mar. 27th at 6:30 PM

Where:     FAU Baseball Stadium

Audio & Stats  Here

Series:      UCF leads the all-time series 38-26, and defeated Florida Atlantic 12-0 last time on the diamond in Orlando.

Projected Starting Pitchers:

FAU - RHP Jake Meiers (1-2, 12.06 ERA, 10 K, 3 BB)
UCF - RHP Ray Hanson (1-1, 1.40 ERA, 13 K, 4 BB)

Coming in at 17th nationally in both the BaseballAmerica.com and USA TODAY/ESPN Top 25 coaches' polls, the Knights mark the second straight ranked opponent to visit FAU Baseball Stadium. And, unlike Miami who came away with an 8-5 win, FAU has had good success against the mid-state foe with a near even mark overall.

After a Friday night loss to open the series, the Owls polished off Middle Tennessee in the final two games allowing just one run combined. Florida Atlantic is 0-2 against ranked opponents on the season (0-2 UM), but will get another shot at picking up pick up some post season resume material with a win Tuesday night.

Kyle Newton's team best 34 hits for the Owls has allowed him to slip past Mike Albaladejo in the category, but Albaladejo has still registered the most runs scored (20). Newton (photo) also holds the RBI crown at present with 22 on the year.

With only 16 contests outside Orlando for the year, UCF is embarking on their longest away stretch in a five game road stand that will include FAU, Houston (3), and Miami. They are coming off a 2-1 series win (2-1, 10-6, 6-15) against East Carolina in which they pounded out a season high 16 hits during the middle game.

Junior 1B D.J. Hicks' 37RBI is good enough for a 3rd place national ranking and best in Conference USA. Whether its by style of play, or as fate would have it, CF Ronnie Richardson has been hit-by-pitch a whopping 15 times already. That tally places him 2nd in the nation.

The Knights sport a .293 team batting average and a 3.21 team ERA, topping the Owls' marks of .283 and 4.14 respectively.

With 6-7 hurler Ray Hanson taking the hill on Tuesday, Florida Atlantic will have their work cut out for them. The senior RHP is 1-1 on the year with a 1.40 ERA and has given up just three earned runs in 19 1/3 innings.

Re: Game Preview: #17 Central Florida vs FAU - Mar 27th, 2012 @ 6:30 PM

Nice crowd tonight at the ball park…The Greeks are out in full effect.

Through three complete:

UCF 3  FAU 1

Meiers roughed up in the 1st inning for two runs behind a Alex Friedrich triple before Corey Keller connects for a solo shot over the right field wall in the 2nd. Friedrich drove in another for the Knights in the top of the 3rd.

Meiers (3IP, 5H, 3ER, 2BB, 3K) finishes at over 50 pitches, Kevin Perez now on the hill.

After six:

The Knights connect for three more in the 4th off three singles, and a mishandled ball by Perez.

A double from Travis Shreve plates another for Central Florida in the 5th.

Corey Keller (3-for-3) drives in Mike Albaladejo in the bottom of the frame for Florida Atlantic, who has stranded nine thus far.

Bo Logan took the hill for FAU in the 6th, replacing Perez (2IP, 5H, 4R, 2ER, 1BB, 2K) and keeps the Knights in check for just the second time tonight.

Albaladejo (4-of-4) narrows the gap with an RBI single which brings home Geoff Jiminez in the bottom half of the inning.

The Knights bullpen getting some quality time with five pitchers having now seen action.

Went to the game last night to support my knights.  You guys need to do some serious work to that stadium if you plan on jumping to a better conf.  Also, someone needs to tell the fraternity boys to be respecful to the visiting teams fans.  I don't enjoy having popcorn and ice thrown at me every time UCF scored.  Security did nothing but tell them to stop.

You've been around here long enough to know you're preaching to the choir.
