Projected Starting Pitchers:

Friday:      FAU – RHP Ryan Garton (6-2, 2.81 ERA, 45 K, 10 BB)

Sunday:    FAU – LHP Austin Gomber (3-1, 2.27 ERA, 42 K, 20 BB)
              ULM – TBA

Florida Atlantic found tough luck in a 6-5 loss to Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night. With a 4-4 game in the bottom of the eighth, Dylan Seigel mishandled a shot down the left field line that allowed the runner to advance to third, and eventually score, giving the Eagles the lead again.

The Owls would plate a run in their next turn at bat to pull even, but normally reliable R.J. Alvarez surrendered the game winning single in the bottom of the ninth in just his fourth pitch. Alvarez is still sitting pretty however, with a 0.73 ERA and a record of 3-0.

Kyle Newton (photo) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and one RBI off his fifth homer of the year.

FAU comes into the series at #28 in the BaseballNews.com poll, and will keep the same rotation in effect that produced a 2-1 series win over visiting South Alabama last weekend. Garton paves the way on the mound with a team best 45 strike outs, and Meiers will continue to fill in for a resting Kevin Alexander who is experiencing tightness in his throwing arm. Austin Gomber has had an impressive freshman debut thus far at 3-1 and takes the hill for Sunday's tilt.

The Warhawks are coming off a two game mid-week series against #8 Baylor. ULM kept it interesting, leading after five complete in game one before the Bears netted three runs in the sixth to seal a 7-5 win. Game two would be even closer, although it didn't happen until late. Trailing 8-3, the Warhawks exploded for a four run ninth inning to pull within a score, before falling 8-7.

Lining the tank (9th) in hitting with a .249 team average, ULM currently sits 8th in Belt standings. But don't let the record fool you. Riding the bats of Jeremy Sy (.350, 7th SBC) and Joey Rapp (.344, 9th SBC) Monroe bested then #2 Arkansas State 2-1 on the road (6-7, 9-0, 10-1) last weekend. The visitors allowed just one run in their victories of the last two games while pounding 19 themselves. They also swiped nine bags, something the Owls will need to keep careful watch over.

On the mound second day man Randy Zeigler has K'd 52 on the year. That mark places him second overall in the Belt.

Warhawk second baseman Caleb Clowers will be honored prior to Friday's game. The senior infielder posted an impressive .996 fielding mark in 2011, committing just one error in 250 chances. That placed Clowers 2nd overall in the country.

There should be plenty of folks on tap to applaud him, as Warhawk Field boasts the nation's #39th best home crowd average for 2012 thus far (1,671).

The Owls took game one from Louisiana-Monroe 9-7 on Friday night at Warhawk Field. However, it wouldn’t come without some late efforts by the home team.

Florida Atlantic (23-12, 11-2) turned two singles coupled with three walks by ULM starter Cale Wine (4-4) in the top of the second into a 3-0 lead.

Another pair of singles in their next at bat would be aided by a throwing error from Taylor Abdalla to push the margin to 5-0 as Geoff Jimenez (2-4, RBI) and Mark Nelson crossed the plate for the Owls.

Mike Albaladejo’s sac fly in the top of the sixth made it a 6-0 affair.

Starter Ryan Garton (7-3) tossed a scoreless contest through five innings, striking out eight, before a double by Brandon Alexander plated the first two runs for the Warhawks in the bottom of the frame.

Nelson (photo) swatted his sixth homer on the year for FAU later in the eighth, a three run shot to left, which gave the visitors a 9-2 advantage, and seemingly prepared an end to the game.

But Louisiana-Monroe (16-18, 4-9) connected for two singles, while milking two walks and two hit-by-pitches, in their turn to score five runs before Nathan Pittman’s catch against the wall in left finally put an end to the offensive.

R.J. Alvarez tossed the ninth inning for FAU, notching his sixth save on the year.

Seven Owls saw hits on the night, with RF Corey Keller and Pittman being the exceptions.

Kyle Newton went 3-for-5, and Nelson was 2-of-3 to lead the way.

FAU will look for third their straight win tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.

Game Two

FINAL:

FAU 5  ULM 13

Nine runs in the first two innings were too much to overcome for Florida Atlantic tonight in as the Warhawks took game two 13-5 to even the series.

ULM starter Randy Zeigler allowed just one hit through four innings, eventually lasting seven complete and striking out 11 Owls in the process.

Louisiana-Monroe (17-18, 5-9) took a 2-0 lead in the first before erupting for seven runs off FAU hurler Jake Meiers in the bottom of the second behind six hits, which included a homer and two doubles.

They would push the margin to 11-0 in the fourth, after tapping Owl reliever Josh Gonzaga for three more hits.

They Owls scored three times in the fifth, plating their first as Mike Albaladejo’s double brought home Mike Spano. Corey Keller (3-of-5, 2RBI) returned favor in his appearance by sending a single into left that drove in Albaladejo, and Kyle Newton then singled as well to land Keller.

Down 11-3, FAU finally got to Zeigler in the seventh with three straight singles to begin the turn at bat. But they were only able to plate one run off a bases loaded walk, stranding three as Spano struck out swinging with two outs.

But the Warhawks kept the offensive pressure on, immediately answering with two of their own to make it 13-4 thanks to Judd Edwards’ homer to left.

An RBI single by Albaladejo (3-for-4) scored the games final run in the Owls' eighth inning trip to the plate,.

The teams were dead even in hits with 13 each, but Florida Atlantic (23-13, 11-3) committed two errors that lead to two unearned runs for ULM.

FAU also left 13 stranded over the course of the game.

Meiers (2-4) took the loss for the Owls, giving up seven hits and seven earned runs in 1.2 innings.

The teams will meet again for the series rubber match tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.

Game Three

FINAL:

FAU 6  ULM 5

ERROR: A link was posted here (img) but it appears to be a broken link.

The Owls (24-13, 12-3) kept their undefeated series mark in Sun Belt play alive on Sunday, hanging on for a 6-5 win over the Warhawks.

An early start made that possible.

Mike Albaladejo singled to start the game, and soon had company in Corey Keller and Kyle Newton, as a fielding error at third and a walk allowed the duo aboard.

Alex Hudak, who struggled at the plate in Saturday’s 14-5 loss (0-of-4), found his rhythm this time, blasting a double into right field that cleared the bags. Geoff Jimenez followed that up with a single to bring in Hudak, and a 4-0 lead was on the board for FAU.

But Louisiana-Monroe struck back for a three spot in the third, smacking five singles off Austin Gomber (4.1 IP, 7H, 5ER, 4BB), who had allowed only one hit up until that point.

A pair of one-out scores in the fifth saw the Warhawks (17-19, 5-10) move ahead 5-4, chasing Gomber from the hill in favor of Bo Logan.

Florida Atlantic answered in their next turn though, retaking the lead at 6-5 as Nathan Pittman (2-of-3) and Mark Nelson each picked up an RBI.

Looking for insurance runs, Nelson made his way to the plate again in the eighth with two on base in Albaladejo and Pittman. But a ground ball ended the opportunity.

R.J. Alvarez got the call in the bottom of the inning for FAU, inheriting a runner in DH Chris Dudley who made it on with a lead-off single. After a walk, ULM would have a threat of their own in place.

Santiago made a diving grab to get the force out at first but that left Warhawks on the corners. Alvarez came through in clutch fashion though on the next set of pitches, enticing a ground ball to end the inning

The ninth would go quietly, with Florida Atlantic retiring in 1-2-3 fashion, and ULM leaving one aboard off a bloop single before the game’s final out.

Five Owls saw two or more hits, with Albaladejo leading with a 3-for-5 showing.

Bo Logan (4-3) picked up the win, tossing 2.2 innings with two hits, and Alvarez notched his seventh save

The Owls improve to 7-2 on the road in league play, and will next take on UCF this Tuesday in Orlando. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
