This weekend brings the battle of the top Sun Belt Baseball teams to Boca Raton, as the Red Wolves currently sit in second place while being two games behind the Owls in the Standings. And with it comes an opportunity for FAU to remain undefeated in SBC series play on the year (5-0).

They should have ample motivation after dropping the last meeting 1-2 in Jonesboro (1-2, 5-3, 3-7) in 2011.

Picking up a 2-1 weekend triumph over ULM last Sunday, the team headed north on Tuesday, hoping to avenge an 11-3 loss to #10 UCF back on March 27th at home. Such would not be the case however, with the Knights racing out to 9-1 lead after four complete before pulling out a 12-3 victory.

Mike Albaladejo (photo) was 2-of-4 with an RBI to lead FAU, who saw 10 of their 31 at bats result in a strike out.

Florida Atlantic welcomes back RHP Kevin Alexander into the rotation on Saturday after being sidelined with tightness in him throwing arm since March 24th's 4-1 win over Middle Tennessee. This should mean better consistency on the mound for the series, and could prove a deciding factor when it's all said and done.

With 36 bombs now tallied in 2012, the squad takes the eighth spot nationally in home runs amongst all Division I teams.

The Red Wolves are coming off a 5-3 loss to Southeast Missouri State (12-26) on Tuesday night. Falling behind 4-0 through three innings, they had their chances to tie or pull ahead late, but couldn't string together an offensive to do so.

Going back to league action last weekend, ASU took 2-of-3 from Western Kentucky (5-0, 3-8, 6-3) at Tomlinson Stadium. Friday night starter starter Jacob Lee is currently 3rd in the league with 56 K's on the year, and tossed a three hit affair during seven innings on the mound.

Swiping two bags from the Hilltoppers during Sunday's tilt, center fielder Michael Faulkner tied the Red Wolves program mark with 29 (1st SBC) stolen bases, and 2B Zach Maggio had the hot bat with a .615 average during the series.

On paper, the two teams are close, with FAU enjoying a slight edge in both team batting (.290 to .277), and pitching (4.42 to 4.54) as well.

Arkansas State is 4-10 overall away from Jonesboro on the season, and the Owls are 5-1 in Sun Belt contests at FAU Baseball Stadium.

Florida Atlantic's current mark of 12-3 in conference action is the best start since joining the league.

Deja Vu…

Another attempt will be made at a double header, tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

If only there were such a thing as an indoor baseball field at the college level  ;D

When would they play the third game? Later in the season?

One game is lost for sure, it is said it will not be made up…if they don't get the first game of the double header in by 12:55 PM today, FAU said they would not be able to play two due to travel plans for ASU.

In the bottom of the 3rd, tied up at one run each, and Owls have a man on 2nd with two out…but the rain is here AGAIN.

Delayed…tarp is back on the field.

Game One

FINAL:

ASU 2  FAU 6

The Owls  (24-15, 13-3) cashed in on throwing and fielding errors on Sunday, coming away with a 6-2 win at FAU Baseball Stadium in the lone contest of the planned three game series.

Starting later than the hoped for 10:00 a.m. slot, the first inning was scoreless.

ASU put a run on the board in the second off an Owl fielding error by Mark Nelson.

He would redeem himself though, smacking a double to lead off the Owls turn, and eventually coming in for a score behind a passed ball from ASU starter Jacob to tie it up.

However, Arkansas-State regained the lead in the top of the fifth 2-1 off a homer to left by shortstop Dustin Jones that appeared to have gone foul. The Owls contested the call, but the run stood.

Another delay presented itself in the top of the sixth, this time for over an hour. Ryan Garton was finished for the afternoon as a result, and R.J. Alvarez took the hill for the Owls.

The Red Wolves (21-18, 10-6) were rusty defensively after the break, committing three errors in the bottom of the sixth that contributed to five more unearned FAU scores.

Nelson (photo 2-of-4, 2 RBI) singled in a pair and Mike Spano drove in the other. Nelson himself would later score off a throwing miscue, and Geoff Jimenez capitalized on Mike Albaladejo’s (1-for-3 RBI) bases loaded hit-by-pitch to account for final run.

Ahmed Garcia picked up his third save on the year, tossing the last two innings in 1-2-3 fashion for Florida Atlantic.

Alvarez (4-0) earned the win going two innings for just a hit while striking out two.

John Koch took the loss for Arkansas State - his first on the season.

The Owls will next travel to Miami on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. start against the Hurricanes.
