FEARLESS PREDICTIONS WEEK ONE FAU vs. Wagner

WEEK ONE IS HERE!!!!!!!!!

Time to break out the beer, brats, and pigskin.

Also, time for some Fearless Predictions. This week's run-down will include some of the games in the national spotlight and of course some SBC action.

Here goes:

FAU vs. Wagner (Friday 8/31)

The Owls kickoff the season at home under new coach Bo Pelini. FAU comes off a 1-11 season and looks to match last season's win total in week one of this season. A lot of off-season talk has been about instilling a new attitude in this team as well as the possibility of JUCO transfer QB Melvin German leading the FAU offense. German is not eligible so the starter will be Graham Wilbert. Wilbert struggled last year and how he transitions to the spread offense will be an important factor in the success of FAU. Expect the Owls to have a distinct advantage in speed and athleticism. The FAU defense should also be solid this year. Wagner comes down from New York following a 4-7 season in 2011 that was capped off with 3 straight wins. Wagner will look to bring that momentum to South Florida as they play up a division in facing the Owls. Expect Wagner to rely heavily on the ground game in an attempt to wear down the FAU defense and slow the pace of the game. This one will probably be ugly early on as both teams look to establish themselves. Expect a close half and then for FAU to pull away late.

FEARLESS PREDICTION: FAU 31 Wagner 14

Michigan State vs. Boise State (08/31)

Boise State never backs down from a fight and they are sure to get one against Sparty. Michigan State brings back a talented team that had a great defense in 2011, but a middle of the pack offense. Boise State also played great defense in 2011 as well as having an explosive passing game. The Broncos did lose some weapons to graduation, but they will give MSU all it can handle in a game that will be hard hitting and full of defense. Michigan State looks to improve on an 11 win season from last year while Boise State will try to maintain its position in the top 25 along with the recogntion as a national power.

FEARLESS PREDICTION: MSU 24 Boise State 21

Michigan vs. Alabama (09/01)

The Crimson Tide meet Michigan at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas for a monster of a game in opening weekend of 2012. Michigan will have to rely on the explosiveness of QB Denard Robinson in order to crack the nations #1 defense in Alabama. The Crimson Tide will look to pound the ball, eat up clock, to keep the Wolverine defense on the field and Robinson waiting on the sidelines. Michigan will have a legitimate chance in this one if the Wolverine rush defense can win the down and distance battle. Look for Robinson to steal the show with spectacular plays and athleticism while Alabama grinds its way to a big early season win.

FEARLESS PREDICTION: Alabama 21 Michigan 17

In SBC action:

FIU @ Duke
Could be a close game as FIU brings in some serious momentum against an ACC opponent.

FEARLESS PREDICTION: FIU 24 Duke 23

Arkansas State @ Oregon
ASU might hang in there for a quarter. The remaining three will be all Oregon.

FEARLESS PREDICTION: Oregon 51 Arkansas State 20

Two upset picks for this week.

South Dakota State beats Kansas
Northern Illinois beats Iowa

Enjoy a cold beverage and some great games. Kick-off weekend only comes once a year!!!

Re: FEARLESS PREDICTIONS WEEK ONE FAU vs. Wagner

I don't see their plan to rely on the running game to wear down our defense working. Our guys have been conditioning all off season to keep up with a spread offense much like oregon's, running a play ever 12 seconds. Do not expect to see the defense show any signs of wearing down until MAYBE the 4th quarter.

I don't know if it will work either, but it is the best chance that Wagner has. Control the clock, keep the FAU defense on the field, and hope for a shot at the win late in the 4th.

Taking all of that into consideration, South Carolina also probably didn't think that their defense would get tired. However, by the second quarter they were sucking wind with their hands on their hips last night against Vandy.

Ouch. So concerned with getting the spelling of the last name right after a long night and early morning that I missed big time on that one. So did my copy editor Rick.

That is what preseason is for I suppose.  I am also still getting warmed up. :P
