Re: ItsOwlTime Men's Basketball Fundraiser - October 29th

Thanks, Rick.

This is a great way to help build the Basketball program.  Last year we helped raise over $60,000 that went to new conditioning equipment, personal computers for the team, an on campus recruiting vehicle (modified golf cart), and better nutrition.

People do not realize what all goes into building a better program.  I remember last year several people questioned why the team needed personal computers (instead of studying at the library like other students).  These student athletes are on the road all the time: in buses, in hotels, on airplanes, etc.  This helps them stay up on their studies which keeps them eligible.

More details to come on the needs for this year.

Here are our photos from the event last year:  It's Owl Time Fundraising Photos

Let's have another sellout this year!!

Go Owls!

I went last year and signed up for this year.

If anybody has Jarvis's ear please make sure he talks about what he did with that $60,000 raised last year.  Transparancy is always encouraging when donating money.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

The goal last year was to raise money to get the team laptops so they can do their studies while on the road, on planes, in buses, in hotel rooms, and waiting around in airports.

1) Everyone received a laptop.

The event raised more than anticipated so the other money went toward:

  1. Better nutrition for the players, like supplements, etc.
  2. A basketball shooting machine to aid the players during practice.
  3. A golf cart customized to carry a recruit and their family around campus.  You can't load everyone up in a car and then walk for 3 hours around the campus.  This allows them to gain access to more areas of campus when they want to show the family.
  4. New conditioning equipment
  5. Orthotics for the Basketball shoes.  Basketball shoes are not made for the pounding of real basketball.  These are inserts to help minimize injury.
  6. Travel winter coats for the team.  Something people never think about.  These players travel to cold areas in the winter.

This is the kind of stuff no one thinks about when trying to build a program.  This is the kind of stuff that the Indiana's and Duke's of the world have without ever even thinking about it.

Hope that helps!!
