FAU issued the 2012013 women's basketball schedule today…

“The opportunity to play Mississippi State and Wisconsin is great for our program,” said Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay. “This schedule will challenge us and prepare our players for an extremely competitive Sun Belt Conference schedule. I am very excited for the season to get underway in November.”

Re: 2012-13 FAU Women's Basketball Schedule

Sometimes I'm in the airport or on a plane with an athlete and I'm reminded how crazy their schedule is during the season. Especially for basketball players where you could be in two different states every weekend. Georgia, Mississippi, Wisconsin, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky… imagine that many plane trips, or worse, that many multi-hour bus trips… and doing it every year.

Kind of a crazy life.

FAU Defeats Georgia Southern 75-55

Junior guard Latavia Dempsey scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Owls past Georgia Southern University 75-55 on Friday at Hanner Fieldhouse.

“We shot the ball better in the second half and got a good road victory,” said Lewis-Jay. “Our pressure helped create easier points. Our conditioning was a factor in the second half. We just wore them down.”

The team closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 35-30 halftime edge, and took a 43-34 lead after a Dempsey jumper with 16:30 left in the second.

Georgia Southern closed the gap to four points, 47-43, at the 12:49 mark, but Owls then went on a 13-7 run over the next five minutes to take a 60-50 lead following a layup by Dempsey, who scored 13 points in the second half.

Kimberly Smith scored nine points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Owls, which did not win a road non-conference game last season, return to the court on Friday, November 16, at 5:30 p.m. at Bethune-Cookman University.
