G- Jack Isenbarger (11.5 ppg)
G- Austin Hamilton (8.5 ppg)
F- Lucas Troutman  (12.0 ppg)
F- Ryley Beaumont  (14.0 ppg)

Elon beat Bridgewater 95-51 Tuesday night for their first victory of the year and eight consecutive home opener win. The Phoenix started the season on the road at Butler, but lost 74-59in a game in which they never led.

Head coach Matt Mathney is entering his fourth year with the school, and the program was picked to finish second in the Southern Conference’s Northern Division.

Four starters return from last year’s squad that went 15-16 and won nine games at home.

Junior Forward Ryler Beaumont is off to a productive start for the year scoring a team-high 13 points at Butler, and adding another 15 against Bridgewater.

In the loss to Butler, the Phoenix where heavily overmatched in the paint and struggled to grab rebounds.

In the school’s win earlier this week, the team hit 16 three-pointers in the game and shot 47.1% from behind the arc. Guard Sebastian Koch knocked down six threes and scored 18 points in the blowout. Four players reached double figures in scoring while the team forced 25 turnovers.

“We played with intensity to start the game and carried it throughout the second half. Moving forward, we saw some great things tonight and I’m excited about hosting the Maui on the Mainland this weekend on our home court,” Mathney said.

Probable Starters

G- Patrick Cole (20.0 ppg)
G- Sterling Smith (3.0 ppg)
G- Taarig Cephas (3.5 ppg)
F- Brandon St. Louis (0.0 ppg)
F- Charles Ieans (2.0 ppg)

The Eagles return no starters from a team that went 14-16 and finished 6th in the MEAC a season ago. The program has had just one winning season in the past eight years and has made the NCAA tournament only once in that period – losing in an opening round game back in 2008.

Head coach Ron “Fang” Mitchell, has been forced to start two true freshmen out of the gates and rely on a host of other newcomers for production.

The team lost its first two games in blowout fashion to USC and Texas, and was dominated on the boards in both outings.

Freshmen point guard Patrick Cole has been the lone bright spot, scoring 25 points against the Trojans while adding another 15 points vs. the Longhorns. Fellow guard Tony Franklin has been effective off of the bench, playing starter-type minutes and averaging 18.5 points per game.

Franklin is a transfer from Towson, and the only senior on the youthful squad.

Charles Ieans and Michael Murray are the big men down low, but neither has reached double figures in a game this season.

Poor shooting has hampered the Eagles this season, as the team is shooting just 29.8% from the field. In the game against Texas the squad hit just 14 field goals.

“You got to be able to hit jump shots. If you don’t hit jump shots, the results are what you saw out there tonight,” Mitchell said of the performance.

Raiders Team Site

Probable Starters

G- Luke Roh (4.3 ppg)
G- Patt Moore (12.7 ppg)
G- Mitch Rolls (5.3 ppg)
F- Murphy Burnatowski (19.7 ppg)
C- John Brandenburg (3.3 ppg)

The Raiders took down MaristWednesday night to improve to 1-2 on the season. Senior forward Brandon James poured in a team-high 25 points off the bench and was 11-of-17 from the floor. The squad combined for 17 assists with seven of them coming from senior point guard Mitch Rolls.

Colgate has experience with 11 lettermen returning, but lost three starters from a team that went 8-22 last season and finished 7th in the Patriot League. Head coach Matt Langel enters his second year at the helm, and the program was picked to finish 7th in the league again.

The veterans of the squad are Rolls and junior guard Pat Moore, who both can score and distribute the ball effectively from the top of the key.

Forward Murphy Burnatowski – who sat out last season after transferring from Maine – was productive in the first two games of the season, providing a presence in the post. The senior scored 23 points in a loss to Illinois and followed the strong showing up with 24 points in a losing effort at Marquette.

In the Raiders two losses they turned the ball over extensively, but in the win over Marist they were able to turn things around and eliminate mistakes.

“While we enjoy this win, we are now looking forward to this upcoming weekend,” Langel said. “It will be a little bit of a tournament atmosphere, back to games on back-to-back nights, and we'll need great productions from all of our guys against tough competition.”

FAU at a Glance

Probable Starters

G Stefan Moody (7.5 ppg)
G Pablo Bertone (8.0 ppg)
G Greg Gantt (17.5 ppg)
F Jordan McCoy (3.5 ppg)
C Dragan Sekelja (6.0 ppg)

The Owls dropped their second consecutive game of this season Tuesday night with a 78-58 loss to Mississippi State. The youth of the squad showed, as the team turned the ball over 27 times and shot just 33.3% from the floor.

Poor point guard play plagued the Owls, as freshmen Stefan Moody and Cavon Baker struggled to run the offense.

"I was very disappointed. It was awful, there are no other words to describe it," head coach Mike Jarvis said told Ken LaVicka of ESPN 760 after the game.

Moody had 7 points on 3-of-7 shooting, and turned the ball over four times while producing just one assist. Baker finished with 11 points, but played only 12 minutes. Together the two have combined for an alarming 14 turnovers this season to just 7 assists.  As a team, the Owls are turning the ball over an average of 22 times a game.

“Ridiculous” Jarvis said of the mistakes.

With the two natural point guards having issues, one player that could bring the ball up the court is another freshman in guard Jackson Trapp.

“Right now we don’t have a point guard. Maybe Jackson Trapp will be our point guard come the Coppin State game,” Jarvis said.

Trapp saw 30 minutes of action against the Bulldogs after playing sparingly in the opener at North Carolina. The 6-foot-4 guard is more of a natural shooter, but don’t be surprised if he carries the ball up the court this weekend and runs the offense.

While the backcourt play was an issue against Mississippi State, the Owls were dominated in the lane getting outscored 48-18 in the paint.

Center Dragan Sekelja scored 3 points on just 1-of-7 shooting and tallied four fouls. In two games, the transfer is averaging only 6 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest.

Forwards Jordan McCoy and Kelvin Penn where ineffective under the hoop and couldn’t stop dribble-drive penetration from the Bulldogs.Freshmen Chris Bryant made his season debut after gaining clearance from the NCAA, and was held scoreless in 10 minutes of action.

Guard Gregg Gantt has been the only solid option for the Owls on offense,  as he is averaging 17.5 points per game. The Owls will continue to rely on the senior for scoring but need to find other offensive production to turn things around.

“We’re going to see if we can find something that maybe will click or work because we better do it awful soon. League play starts early this year,” Jarvis said.

FAU has had mixed results in early season tournaments under Jarvis, winning two games at the 2010 Athletes in Action Classic in Portland and losing two last season at World Vision Basketball Classicin Seattle.

Penn in for Sekelja.

Ok, so it is obvious to see we are downgrading the talent level today.

Better win.
