The Series

The two in-state schools haven’t met the past five seasons, but that doesn’t mean that the old rivalry series isn’t a storied one. Stetson and FAU squared off for the first time back in 1993 when the Owls joined the Atlantic Sun Conference and have met a total of 30 times since.

Stetson holds a 16-14 all-time advantage, and are 10-4 in contests played on their home court.

The last time the two programs met, it was neutral site game at the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach in which the Owls won 68-62 on November 16th, 2007.  Guard Paul Graham III paced the team with 18 points while center Carlos Monroe added an add 13 points of his own.

FAU has won four of the last six meetings in the series including a contest that went into overtime.

The Hatters will travel to Boca Raton on December 18th for the second matchup of the season.

Stetson at a Glance

The Hatters trailed by as many as 25 points in the first half Monday night before falling to Bethune-Cookman in a 86-63 loss and dropping to 2-4 on the season.

Center Adam Pegg continued the strong start to his senior campaign by scoring 17 points in a losing effort, but as a team the squad turned the ball over 17 times.

Despite having just two wins to their name, Stetson has put a competitive brand of basketball out on the court this year. In the season opener at Miami, the team trailed by just two points with a little over two minutes remaining in the game before losing 87-79. Pegg was an impressive 4-of-5 on his three point attempts, and kept the visitors alive for most of the contest.

When the Hatters hosted USF, the game was all tied up with less than four minutes reaming in regulation before an 8-0 run sealed a 63-54 win for the Bulls.

“I felt like our guys played hard enough to win the game,” head coach Casey Alexander said of the loss to USF. “I'm really proud of their effort. I think they thought they could win the game, they played like they were going to win the game, but we just simply weren't good enough down the stretch.  I don't think it's anything they did, or we didn't do. We had some great looks, they just didn't fall in.”

Stetson was picked to finish sixth in the Atlantic Sun Conference this season, and returns all five starters from last year’s squad that concluded with a 9-20 overall record.

Pegg is the Hatters best player and was named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Conference Team. At 6-foot-9, 290 pounds he has size the play under the hoop, but has the knack for hitting down shots from the outside. The transfer from Delaware is shooting 45.5% on his looks from downtown, and has reach double-digits in scoring in all but one game this season.

Outside of Pegg, the Hatters rely heavily on production from junior guard Aaron Graham who usually starts the game on the bench. Graham has scored in double-figures every game this year and had a season-high 21 points against Miami.

Forward Willie Green has a connection to FAU, as he and Jordan McCoy where teammates at Olympia High School. The two graduated together after playing in the Florida 6A State Championship their senior season. Both players start at forward for their respective squads now, and should frequently be matched-up with each other.

Stetson is 0-4 this season when they have committed 19 or more turnovers.

Owls at a Glance

Mike Jarvis became the winningest head coach in FAU’s Divison-1 history Saturday night when the Owls defeated Arkansas State 72-65 at home.

The win moved Jarvis past former coach Sidney Green for the most Divison-1 victories by a coach at the school and secured the team’s first conference win of the year – improving the Owls to 3-4 (1-1) on the season.

Guards Greg Gantt and Stefan Moody combined for 51 of the team’s 72 points, and where effective shooting the ball all night long. The duo was an impressive 6-of-11 from behind the arc and helped spark the squad into playing arguably their best offense of the season.

“The reason those two guys are so good together, is because they are different types of players. One is obviously great in the low-post and a very good three point shooter and that’s Greg. Stef (Moody) is just… when he learns how to play it’s just going to be ridiculous,” Jarvis said.

While it’s easy to point to the tandem’s hot stroke from long range as reason for the win, point guard Jackson Trapp was just as effective.

The ball-handler dished out six assists while playing a team-high 39 minutes.

“Jackson’s right now the guy; you know who the glue is. He’s the candyman. He distributes the candy, and it’s really more about Jackson getting the ball to the right guys than it is about either one of them,” Jarvis said.

Since Trapp took over as the starting point guard two weeks ago, he has improved in every aspect of his game. While he did turn the ball over four times against the Red Wolves, he also grabbed a career-high six boards.

The Owls were able to set season highs in total points, assists, field goal percentage and blocks in the win.

Center Dragan Sekelja rebounded nicely after being held out of the starting lineup against South Alabama, and had six points to go along with seven rebounds off the glass. More importantly for the first time all year it appeared that he had a presence on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.

“He came to prove tonight that he did care about playing, and he wants to play and he wants to play hard. He made a huge difference,” Jarvis said. “I don’t care how many points he scores, he was a presence, and that’s what you’re capable of doing when he’s 7-foot and has some athletic ability.”

Although the victory will provide a nice building block for this season, Jarvis feels that there is plenty of room for improvement.

The team is giving up an average of 68.3 points per game, and is getting just 5.7 steals a contest.

“After a bad loss it’s usually not as bad as you thought, and after a good win it’s usually not as great as you thought,” Jarvis said. “We’re going to watch every defensive possession – that’s all we’re going to watch – and I’m sure after watching every defensive possession will play better, because that’s what wins championships.”

Owl's Nest Prediction

FAU played some of their best basketball of the season against Arkansas State, as the offense was efficient and finally found a rhythm.

The question Thursday night will be if the team can spread the ball around and find other scoring options outside of Moody and Gantt. While the duo has proven to be capable of putting points up on the board, the squad can’t rely solely on their production to win every game.

The key will be jumping out to an early lead and then being able to run the motion offense with Trapp from a half-court set.

Stetson’s Pegg should provide an interesting matchup for Sekelja and Kelvin Penn, but if the two are able to hold him in check the Owls should pull out a close one on the road.
