12/10/09 H W 106-99 (3OT)
11/17/10 H W 88-58
12/10/11 H W 98-70

The Owls enjoy a 3-0 mark against the Royals heading into Sunday's tilt. A rocky finish was had in the first meeting, before Florida Atlantic won the next two in convincing fashion.

Most recently, FAU used a +20 mark off the glass to aid in a 98-70 rout of the Royals last December. Led by Gantt's 21 points, shooting was indeed efficient (53.7% FG, 48.0% 3PT) for the Owls, as were assists (23). Pablo Bertone enjoyed a game high 11 rebounds.

Bryce Kachinski (18 points) went 4-of-5 from long distance for WU, who surrendered 46 points in the paint.

Warner at a Glance:

After being recognized as the #10 team in NAIA Div II, the wins have dropped off for the Royals, who have let three in a row get away.

Last Wednesday, an 18 point second half deficit comeback effort fell just short in a 84-86 loss to Johnson & Wales. Perimeter defense was a key suspect with the Wildcats dropping a 12-of-22 showing.

Through 10 games, WU lets opponents score more in the second half of contests on average (+7.7 pts), but nearly matches pace by upping their offensive output as well (+7 pts).

The guard trio of Kachinski, Chiverto Halstead, and Ian Wilhelm are a combined 38.3% from three point land off 162 collective tries; which is where the team looks to cash in with 45% of their overall attempts abounding.

In the front court, 6-7, 210 forward Mark St. Fort, a transfer from Savannah State, is posting a productive 17.9 ppg since joining the line-up, and enjoys the best connect rate on the squad (45-66, 68.0%).

Warner returns three starters from last year's team that finished 24-11 overall, and 10-6 in The Sun Conference (3rd).

They were tabbed to finish 2nd in the league for 2012-13 behind continued favorite Northwood, who received eight first place votes to the Royal's one.

In comparison to Florida Atlantic's 29,400+ student enrollment, Warner's total is listed at just 1,100.

FAU at a Glance:

Florida Atlantic banged, shot, swatted, and swiped their way to a 88-78 victory over Stetson on Thursday night - setting season highs in five categories in the process: blocks, field goals made, field goal percentage, free throws made, steals, and total points.

One could say it was the most well rounded performance to date for the young team.

"I think the guys have started to figure out how hard you have to practice everyday", said Coach Jarvis II after the game in an interview with Ken LaVicka. "I think this team will improve more than any team we have had."

Heading into the season, the Senior Jarvis said he wasn't quite sure where he was going to find "team" leadership coming from. Seniors Jordan McCoy and Greg Gantt were the two candidates of choice - McCoy as a character role model, and Gantt receiving the nod for point production.

Now with seven games under the belt, both have met the challenges presented to them, and then some.

"Jordan is doing a good job of leading by example, and definitely has the respect of his teammates", said Jarvis.

He's also chipped in the added bonus of upping both his scoring (+1.3 ppg) and rebounds (+2.2 pg) over last year.

However, the true offensive undertaking has come in dramatic fashion in Gantt, who has all but caught fire while averaging a team best 21.0 ppg on the year (+7 ppg 2011-12).  In the last three games he has dropped a whopping 30.6 avg - leaving the Gainesville native tied for 13th nationally as of Dec. 7th.

Jarvis said his sharpshooter is a stealthful 25 pounds lighter these days, enabling him to cash in on the continuous motion found in the Owls' offense; which is designed to allow players to slip between opposing team's defensive schemes via off-the-ball screens.

"Greg has taken advantage of better conditioning. He's got a point guard that is looking to him as a first option, has also been able to get some good looks in the post, and plays well in tandem with Stefan", Jarvis said.

Other offensive trends to note include Stefan Moody having rattled off three straight double digit scoring efforts (17, 22, 16), and improved overall team three point production thus far (+3%).

This is good news on the heels of Thursday's victory over the Hatters, as Owls moved to 4-1 on the year when hitting at 38.9% or better from downtown.

FAU will look for their third straight win on Sunday, and can find themselves above .500 for the first time since 2010-11 should that happen.

Owl's Nest Prediction

Tuneups are always good to throw into the scheduling mix. This one comes at an odd time given league play already underway, but it does offer a quality opportunity for continued process improvement.

The Owls should do just that against the Royals, who will try and focus on the long ball for significant production, while attempting to get a few underneath at times as well.

WU hasn't faced off against a formidable post defense as of yet, and that likely will limit front court success in the end.

Expect the Owls in double digits at the final horn, with increased minutes from the bench.

Now, that could work in their favor…

After all, it is tough to chase four water bugs around the floor.

Although they went with their "big" set last outing, so let's see if that holds.

Tim said

I cannot understand the rationale of scheduling a basketball game on a Sunday afternoon during football season!  I have to think with the combination of that and school being out, attendance this afternoon is going to take a BIG hit.

So far you are spot on.

80 people here right now…

Hopefully when you and your crew get here we can add 30 more.
