Nutt has plenty of experience on college's biggest stage as the head coach at both Arkansas and Ole Miss. He has amassed a 135-96 record and won four bowl games, including three wins in the Cotton Bowl.
He last coached at Ole Miss in 2011, but he was fired after winning just two games. It ended a four-year stint at the school.
Story
As one former FBS assistant with an eye and ear on FIU noted Monday night, a Butch Davis or a Houston Nutt is used to practice fields and platoons of a support staff.
And those were the two names he used – Butch Davis and Houston Nutt, the former Arkansas and Ole Miss coach. Thought that was interesting. Nutt interviewed for the South Florida job that went to Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart, so he's willing to move to Florida and willing to step down from the stature of his last two jobs.
Then, I saw Charles Robinson's Yahoo report. Hmmm…I wondered if this might turn out to be one-stop shopping for FIU. Nutt and Davis both are represented by agent Jimmy Sexton, who now works out of Creative Artists Agency.

What's your take on him? If he did go to FIU you think it's a good hire for them? I know who Nutt is and I know he was at Arkansas and Ole Miss but don't really know much else about him. Would he be a big name that would help turn them around, or would it be a terrible decision?

Up for debate, IMO…
After overall marks of 9-13, and 8-8, went Gangbusters at Murray State (Ohio Valley) for the 1995 & 96 seasons: 22-3, 16-0 (no bowls).
This was his "shining moment".
Then was picked up by Boise State, where he posted a record of 5-6, 3-2 (Big West).
Somehow still got a nod to the SEC for stints at both Arkansas and Ole Miss respectively.
Registered a 99-74 overall showing, and 52-60 conference mark, in the highest conference in the land between the two programs.
The last two years at Ole Miss however were 6-18, 1-15.
Game over for Nutt.

What no one is talking about is when he hired Guz Malzahn (current Auburn coach) to run his offense at Arkansas and Darren McFadden almost won the Heisman. Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis where also part of that backfield and the team went to the 2006 SEC championship game - a huge accomplishment for the program. I know a lot of people will try and look for some way to say that Nutt did it with "another coaches players", but he had been in Fayetteville since 98' so he recruited the future NFLers.
At Ole Miss he recruited Branden Bolden (current New England Patriot) and hired Tyrone Nix to run his defense. The team won 8 games his first year, after the school had suffered from four straight losing seasons and the Rebels beat Florida and LSU on the road. The next year the team went to the Cotton Bowl, before the program would struggle for two seasons and fire Nutt.

+1 It would be a good hire for FIU. Root against it.

Re: Houston Nutt to Coach FIU?
The 38-year-old Miami native–the son of former Miami mayor Manny Diaz–has decided against returning home because he felt the timing was not right. The source said that the coach is determined to help the Longhorns get back on top of the college football world.
In 2011, Diaz moved on to Texas, where he led the top defense in the Big 12 as the Longhorns ranked first in the conference in total defense, rushing defense and pass defense. However, this fall, the 8-4 Longhorns struggled on defense, ranking No. 75 in scoring defense and No. 72 in total defense as they were plagued by injuries and all sorts of tackling issues.
Story
This is actually hilarious to me! The man's father is the mayor of Miami and even he doesn't want to coach that team! Reports are still saying that the longer this plays out, the more likely they will name Houston Nutt as the next coach.
Nutt must be desperate to get back into the game because as of now, from what I've read it doesn't even look like he's been interviewed
