FAU Football Experiences More Changes in Staff

Post

Assistant AD for Football Operations Sean Todd (photo right) is no longer a part of the Florida Atlantic football team per multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.  The details of the departure are not being publicized, but sources state that he was released.

Todd worked at FAU for over 11 years and was a key component to the program’s development as he was there from its inception. His duties included coordinating day-to-day operations for the football team, organizing team travel arrangements and assisting with the team’s academics, scheduling, compliance and recruiting.

He was hired in June of 2001 after working for the Miami Dolphins and moved his way up to Assistant AD for Football Operations in the summer of 2010.

Video Coordinator Steve Cutcher (photo left) has also left the team – but on his own terms – according to multiple sources.

Cutcher joined the team in the fall of 2001 and was responsible for filming games and practices for the Owls’ coaching staff. In 2008 he was recognized as the Sun Belt Conference Video Coordinator of the Year and was placed on the national Collegiate Sports Video Association ballot for his work.

Both Todd and Cutcher were holdovers from former head coach Howard Schnellenberger’s staff, and stayed aboard when new head coach Carl Pelini was hired last fall.

It is believed that Pelini will look for a candidate that can assist more heavily in recruiting to fill Todd's position.

Florida Atlantic University declined comment on either situation.

Disgusted by this. Coaches handle recruiting, not operations guys. Pelini has made a lot of enemies with this move, as these guys were loved by many. No way Chun had much of a say in this.  Hard to believe they're gone, yet clowns like Dexter Lamont and our pathetic soccer coaches still have jobs.

I agree with your opinion for the Assistant AD for football operations, but maybe they are going to a private company for filming, or hire from within maybe.

Love these guys as well, but this stuff is going to happen.

We all want to take the next step in College Football, but it won't alway be on our terms.

It's a business, no room for sentiments. Given their positions they were lucky Pelini gave them a year under his regime to decide wheather or not he was going to bring in his own people.

Re: FAU Football Experiences More Changes in Staff

I think this is a change of the times. You have to give credit and show respect to both Sean and Steve, as they where there from the get go.

Assistant AD for Football Operations or more simply DOF (Director of Football Operations) is kind of developing into a new breed in college football. Lots of head coaches are now hiring ex-players or prominent high school coaches to these titles in hopes of gaining and edge in the recruiting department. Or more simply they want their own guys around them. Almost always when a new head coach is hired he brings his current DOF with him.

Video Coordinators have also become a platform where young coaches have developed and climbed the ladder.

For example, Kentucky's new head coach hired Youngstown State linebackers coach Frank Buffano to Director of Football Operations essentially creating an extra coach. Another example of someone who has been used to gain an edge is Mark Pantoni at Ohio State.

In football today, you adapt with the times and change or die - which have done once already! We had better have learned from it too!

Both guys were professional… with years of experience at FAU, contributing at a level that will be sorely missed.  It makes me wonder if our "Athletic department leadership" will ever rise to their standard.  I really doubt it!

It sucks any time someone is out of a job, but this is the nature of the business.  A new coach comes in and he wants to bring in his own people, you can't fault anyone for that.  It's part of the job and evenyone that works in that profession knows that.

FAU Football Experiences More Changes in Staff

Pelini isn't making changes like this unless he feels it is in the best interests of the team. Hate to see anyone lose their jobs but that's the way it is in college sports.
