Bracewell headlines three departures with possibly one more

Backup quarterback Nick Bracewell (photo right center) and running back Cary White are no longer part of the Florida Atlantic football team.

Tight end Terrell Mitchell's future remains in limbo, while special-teamer Blake Bierman has also left the program.

All four individuals informed the coaching staff of their choices early last week according to sources with knowledge of the circumstances.

Bracewell – who entered fall camp in contention for the starting quarterback position – will end his playing career at FAU without ever throwing a pass.

The redshirt sophomore finished the season listed as the third quarterback on the depth chart and saw action in just one contest. It is believed that he will now seek a transfer with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Much like Bracewell, White was passed on the depth chart this past season and will now part ways with the team. The sophomore running back rushed for 35 yards during his freshman campaign, but didn't receive a single carry in 2012.

According to White's Facebook page, he is now attending Bethune-Cookman.

Mitchell currently isn’t enrolled in classes at FAU for the spring semester, and is back home in his native state of Louisiana. Having originally signed with the team out of Fort Scott Community College, the tight end was a highly touted prospect in head coach Carl Pelini’s first recruiting class, but was limited in his first season due to injuries.

According to a source, the redshirt sophomore hasn’t been ruled out for the 2013 season, but as of now his future with the program remains uncertain.

Bierman – a walk-on and special team journeyman– was the placekicking holder this past season and served on a few special teams units over his career. He will now forgo his redshirt senior season to pursue other off-the-field opportunities.

The most interesting departure comes from Bracewell, as it leaves FAU with just one quarterback on the roster that has FBS game experience. Stephen Curtis started last season’s opener, but outside of him, quarterbacks Melvin German and Jaquez Johnson haven’t taken a meaningful snap.

White’s exit comes after the emergence of running back Jonathon Wallace, who rushed for 648 yards and eight touchdowns this past season.

With Bracewell and White leaving, two scholarships will open up for the program.

Mitchell – who at one time in his career was committed to Oklahoma and Kentucky – could return to FAU before the start of next season.

***Update***

A source with personal knowledge of the matter has confirmed that Bracewell is still a member of the FAU football team and currently enrolled in classes.

"He was told one day his scholarship was going to be pulled and maybe not the next. He will be at practice because he is on scholarship this spring," the source said.

With Bracewell still on scholarship for this semester, he will enter spring practice with the goal of winning the starting quarterback job.

While it was thought that he was considering a transfer, the source expressed that the statement wasn't true.

"Nick never informed the coaches he was transferring, and had big plans on competing this spring," the source said.

It is unclear at the time what will happen to Bracewell after spring practice with his scholarship, but as of now he is a member of the team.

Where did you get this info about Bracewell? Why would he leave now and not before the semester so he could have spring practice where he chose to transfer to.

I hung out with cary yesterday, it pretty much came down to the fact that he did not fit the prototypical spread offense RB.  He weighed 220 and coaches wanted him at 190. I wish him and Bracewell the best of luck.

Well best of luck to all of them.  Hopefully we can put those scholarships to good use.  We should look to sign two freshmen qbs and LS becomes an immediate need.

I agree, best of luck, but for us opens up more slots for potential starters or impact newcomers!

Re: QB Nick Bracewell, RB Cary White Leave FAU Football Team

This story leads the reader to believe that Bracewell chose to leave on his own accord, when in reality on Tuesday he was told that his scholarship would most likely not be renewed. Last year, he was told that he didn't necessarily fit the offense and may not get to play, but that he did not have to worry about losing his scholarship. With a year before he finishes his bachelor's degree and 2 years of eligibility left, he really has no other choice but to transfer to another school given that his scholarship "most likely will not be renewed".  It is a shame that he was not told this prior to beginning of the semester,
so that he could participate in spring practice somewhere that his talents can be put to use.

Was he not offered a medical ineligibility scholarship? I thought everyone did that with players that didn't develop or won't cut it at this level.

This frees up some schollys. I hope they all do well at what ever they choose.

German has been relieved of his scholly too. Maybe he can join kooi at Albany state, but I believe Bracewell is a lot better than that. Pretty shitty they waited till semester started and knocked him out of spring practice where ever he goes. Hope Johnson has what it takes cause Curtis could be leaving too.
