FAU falls in extra innings to #20 Miami

Rocklein tallies 2 RBIs, but Hugh Adams blown save in 8th proves costly

Florida Atlantic's upset bid of #20 Miami fell short Tuesday night following a late inning collapse.

Having led for almost the entire contest, a two-out RBI single from Brad Fieger in the 11th inning was good enough to give the Hurricanes a win and leave FAU with more questions than answers.

“This is very disappointing,” head coach John McCormack said. “In my opinion it shouldn’t have got to that point, we have to be better in those situations.”

Leading 4-2 in the top of the eight inning, McCormack sent senior reliever Hugh Adams to the mound to record the final four outs of the game and preserve a victory. However, Adams’s first pitch was a high fastball over the plate that resulted in a two-run home run for Miami.

The long ball from David Thompson tied the game for the Hurricanes and capped a comeback that spanned over three innings.

The Owls had built an early 3-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from Nathan Pittman, and added to the advantage in the fourth inning with a two-run home run from Tyler Rocklein.

Rocklein (pictured), who came into the contest batting just 1-for-13 on the season, finished the night 3-of-6 with two RBI’s, but his individual efforts weren't enough.

FAU continuously left runners stranded in scoring position and managed just four runs off of 15 hits.

The Hurricanes tallied two runs of their own in the top of the sixth, before Sean Murrell would record his first career RBI to give FAU a 4-2 advantage.

Things where looking bright for the Owls with Adams inserted to close out the game, but Thompson’s home run would tie the score and send play into extra innings.

Jimmy Tornabene would take over for Adams in the 11th inning, which in turn allowed for Miami to put a runner in scoring position. Fieger would then slap a single down the right foul line and the runner would cross home plate sealing the final result.

“They made the pitches when they where suppose to, and we weren't able to,” McCornack said.

Tornabene was awarded the loss, while starter Brandon Rhodes was given a no decision. Rhodes was impressive in his first career start, pitching five and a third innings while giving up just two earned runs. The freshman recorded four strikeouts and produced a performance that was worthy of a victory.

Adams was handed a blown save, as his mishap in the eight inning resulted in the extra innings loss.

“We’re talking about advancing to regionals and super-regionals, and we have got to win this game at home. If where going to sit there and tell the (NCAA) committee that we’re back, we have got to win this game,” McCormack said.

FAU fell to 3-1 on the season and will host Alabama this weekend for a three-game series.

Over all we are a better team than last year but last year we would have put RJ Alvarez in in the eighth. We would have gotten the W. Nice game though. Look forward and keep playing hard. Baseball…FAU's forgotten program.
