Florida Atlantic is coming off a double header sweep over Florida A&M University on Tuesday night. The team belted out a season high 15 runs in game one, and put away the Rattlers 8-3 in seven innings during the night cap.

Shortstop Mitch Morales (photo) continues to lead Florida Atlantic in hitting, posting a .362 average. As a team, the Owls are outperforming opponents .285 to .225 at the plate. CF Nathan Pittman has scored 11 of the team's 71 total runs.

The long ball continues to be elusive however, with just three tallied thus far for 2013.

1B Mark Nelson and RF Corey Keller each notched seven in 2012 but only Nelson has connected so far this season. The duo does however lead the squad in doubles with five each. That puts Keller just past the half way mark of his 2012 season mark of eight, and sees Nelson just under half of his 2012 total of 12.

On the mound, FAU's starters have amassed an efficient 2.29 collective ERA, and the entire staff boasts 116 total strikeouts in 117 complete innings.

The Owls bring a 5-3 mark at FAU Baseball Stadium into the weekend.

Toledo is the defending Western Division champion of the Mid American Conference. Last season the Rockets finished at 19-8, but were sent home early in post season play as the bats simply did not come alive for them.

Pitching was a strength, however Head Coach Corey Mee is forced find replacements for the losses of two weekend starters, a top reliever, and their closer in 2013. One prospect is that of Kyle Shaw, who sat out 2012 with an injury. Shaw tossed 3.1 innings against South Florida on March 1st, but surrendered six runs off nine hits.

Also seeing some midweek action, Toledo slipped past Valparaiso 9-8 on Tuesday to earn their third win of the year. The trio of LF Tyler Grogg, DH Matt Delewsk, and C Lucas Sokol accounted for nine if the Rocket's season high 15 hit performance.

In stark contrast to FAU, Toledo will play at home in 2013 only 15 times out of a total of 56 contests.

They are 2-3 on the year in games decided by a single run.

Game One

FINAL:

TOL 3  FAU 4

Mark Nelson's walk off single in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled the Owls to a 4-3 win over Toledo in the first game of the weekend series at FAU Baseball Stadium.

Friday night starter Austin Gomber went seven innings, scattering 10 hits for two runs, while striking out six.

The Rockets (3-8) showed patience at the plate and ran the bases aggressively to put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the first.

FAU’s Nathan Pittman matched UT’s play by moving from first to third on a sacrifice bunt before crossing the plate via an RBI single from Corey Keller.

UT took the lead a second time in the top of the third and held the advantage until the bottom of the fifth when Pittman doubled in Mitch Morales, who led off the inning for the Owls (9-5) with a single and moved to second on a bunt.

FAU regained the lead 3-2 in the seventh only to see it evaporate in the top of the eighth.

Tied at three, the Owls played small ball to load the bags before Nelson’s heroics.

Nelson was 2-for-4 with 2RBI and Ricky Santiago also had two hits.

Kevin Alexander tossed the final two innings for FAU, allowing just a hit, and took the win to improve to 2-1 on the year.

The teams meet again tomorrow at 4:00 PM for game two with Jake Meiers on the hill for the Owls.

Way to go ! Maybe the basketball coach should hang out at the ball field and see how to win a tight one. It starts with coaching till the game is over . Lets take two more from Toledo. See you at four.

Game Two

FINAL:

TOL 6  FAU 1

Florida Atlantic (9-6) managed just five hits in a 6-1 loss to Toledo on Saturday.

Trailing 1-0, FAU's lone score came off an RBI single from C Mike Spano in the bottom of their first inning.

Geoff Jimenez and Mark Nelson each slapped back-to-back doubles in the frame for the Owls' two extra base efforts.

However, only two more hits would be had by the home team for the rest of the game, as UT (4-8) pitching was on point.

Corey Keller and Ricky Santiago registered singles in the 6th for the balance.

Toledo touched up Owls starter Jake Meiers (L, 1-2) for four runs in four innings of work off eight hits.

Ahead 4-1 through four complete, the Rockets (4-8) added insurance runs in both the 6th and 8th innings.

Relievers Michael Sylvestri (4IP, 4H, 1R, 5K) and Andrew Archer (.1IP, 1H, 1R) received the credit, and Bo Logan threw the final .2 of an inning.

Toledo's Kyle Slack was the winning pitcher (6IP, 5H, 1R, 4K), and 2B Deion and 3B Anthony Smith went 2-of-3 with 2RBI to lead the Rockets, who were just one hit away from matching their season high of 15 set last weekend.

The teams will meet again tomorrow for the rubber match at 1:00 PM.

Mark Nelson cranked out a pair of home runs to lead the Owls past Toledo 7-5 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the weekend series.

Nelson (photo) was 3-of-5 with 4RBI on the afternoon. LF Tyler Rocklein wasn't far behind with a 3-of-5 showing himself to accompany 2RBI, and C Levi Meyer also went 3-of-5 at the plate.

The Owls extended an early 1-0 lead with a pair fourth inning scores, but Toledo answered with a three spot during the top of the fifth to take control of the game at 4-3.

It wouldn't last however, with Rocklein sending one over the right field wall to even the score in the bottom half of the frame.

Florida Atlantic then added two more in their next trip to the plate, this time via Nelson's first homer, before closing out their offense in the 8th with another blast from the senior first baseman.

The score could have been more disparate, but FAU (10-6) left 12 runners on base over the course of the contest.

On the mound, Jeremy Strewn threw 4.2 innings, allowing four runs off seven hits before giving way to Kevin Alexander for one out in top half of the fifth.

Bo Logan then tossed three scoreless innings, scattering two hits, to earned his first win of 2013 in middle relief.

Toledo plated a single run in the top of the ninth off closer Hugh Adams, who was credited his fifth save on the year.

The Rockets (4-9) got five innings from starter Ryan Wilkinson (12H, 4R, 4K), and reliever Caleb Schillace (2IP, 2H, 2R, 3W) was saddled with the loss. Catcher James Miglin led UT at the plate with a 2-of-5 showing and 2RBI.

CF Nathan Pittman had the defensive play of the day, racing for an athletic catch deepest part of the park, before meeting with the wall.

The Owls next host Maine for a two game mid-week series that begins on Tuesday night at 6:30 PM.
