Florida Atlantic returns to the diamond Tuesday night for the first contest in a two game midweek series with Maine. The Owls (10-6) took two of three games from Toledo over the weekend to give the club it's second series win of the season and another solid performance before conference play.

Senior first baseman Mark Nelson was the difference against the Rockets, connecting on two home runs Sunday afternoon to give FAU a 7-5 win. On Friday, he hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Owls a 4-3 victory.

Nelson was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for his efforts after driving in eight runs and compiling a .429 batting average (9-for-21).

FAU will send two freshman to the mound for the two game set against Maine. Brandon Rhodes will get the nod on Tuesday night with Seth McGarry getting the ball on Wednesday.

Rhodes has been effective this year as the midweek starter stirking out 15 batters in four appearances. McGarry picked up a win in his only appearance of the season against FAMU tossing three scoreless innings.

Maine (8-10) travels to Boca Raton in the midst of a three week trip to Florida. The Black Bears took down Chicago State on Sunday winning 13-7, behind production from their bats. The team has competed for the past few weeks in the Snow Bird Classic held in Port Charlotte and has posted a 4-4 record in the tournament.

The Black Bears are led by second baseman Troy Black who owns a .367 batting average and have five batters with a .300 average or better.

FAU and Maine have already shared numerous opponents this season with both squads having defeated West Virgina and lost to Miami.

Seems like a good amount of baseball fans are going to the WBC game at Marlins Park. I'm worried about the student turnout tonight.

Game One

FINAL:

Maine 8  FAU 0

Florida Atlantic was blanked by Maine Tuesday night losing 8-0 at home. The Owls (10-7) failed to score a run and were shutout for the first time all season.

Freshman pitcher Jake Marks tossed a complete game shutout for Maine (9-10), holding FAU’s batters to just three hits. Marks, who was drafted last year in the 28th round by the New York Mets, picked up his first career win in the performance.

FAU starter Brandon Rhodes allowed a run early in first inning, as the visitors were able to strike in the opening frame. The Black Bears would add to lead in the sixth inning, as Rhodes surrendered two additional runs before being replaced by reliever Jimmy Tornabene.

Tornabene allowed four more runs in the sixth inning before getting out of the frame with a strikeout. The visitors would extend the lead in the eight inning to bring the score to 8-0.

Rhodes (3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB ) would take the loss and move to 1-1 on the year.

Owl’s right fielder Geoff Jimenez would extend his hit streak to seven games with a single, but the club couldn’t manage an extra base hit. First baseman Mark Nelson went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, while leadoff man Nathan Pittman was 0-for-4.

This isn’t the first time FAU has been shutout by an American East opponent, the Owls opened the 2011 season with a 5-0 loss to Stony Brook.

FAU and Maine will meet again Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. before the Owls open up conference play this weekend against FIU.

Game Two

FINAL:

Maine 6  FAU 15

Florida Atlantic rebounded Wednesday night to defeat Maine 15-6 at home.

After being shutout the previous night, the Owls (11-7) strung together a season-high 17 hits to split the midweek series with the Black Bears (9-11).

“The offensive effort is a result of better swings and walks,” head coach John McCormack said. “Tonight was a combination of good preparation before the game, good attitude and a good feeling.”

FAU’s batters were walked 10 times and took advantage of Maine’s pitching staff when they got the opportunity.

Freshman Brendon Sanger drove in two runs with a two-out single in the bottom of the second inning which was followed by a hit from Levi Meyer that gave the Owl’s an early 4-0 lead.

Right fielder Tyler Rocklein (pictured above) would knock his third home run of the season in the sixth inning, after the Black Bears clawed their way back into the contest.

Rocklein finished the night an impressive 5-for-6 with three RBIs.

“We came out loose and tried to have fun, we have to carry this momentum,” Rocklein said.

Starter Seth McGarry (3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 K, 2 BB) would pick up his second win of the season for FAU, despite his limited work. Reliever Andrew Archer surrendered three runs on four hits in the fourth inning, while Bo Logan tossed a scoreless fifth frame.

Sanger went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, three runs scored and two walks out of the designated hitter position. Meyer was 2-for-4 with three RBIs of his own while Mark Nelson tallied two RBIs.

The 15 runs the Owls produced matched the season-high which was set last week against FAMU.

Maine used eight different pitchers in the game, as starter Logan Fullmer was handed the loss.

FAU will open up conference play this weekend with a series against rival FIU. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
