FAU Football Spring Camp April 8: Allen Talks TE’s; Spring Game Tidbit

Post

Pelini and Allen like development of TE’s

Tight end is a strength for Florida Atlantic, and head coach Carl Pelini attested Monday morning after practice that the unit could be even deeper than expected. With spring practice nearing the home stretch, Pelini remarked that three players can be relied upon at the position.

“We’re excited,” Pelini said. “We got three legit threats at tight end.”

Senior Nexon Dorvilus and junior Alex Deleon were already thought to be solid options, based upon their production from last season, but it’s the players behind that are making a difference.

Darion Howard, a transfer from Northern Iowa, has made catch after catch this spring and tight end coach Jarred Allen has taken notice. Allen claimed that if the team were to play a game this weekend, Howard would be in the rotation.

“He’s done everything we have asked of him. He’s coming along and learning the tempo and he’s practicing better and better each day,” Allen said.

Another player that has developed is walk-on Michael Harrop, who along with Chris Jackson, has seen time at the blocking U-back position.

Allen explained that he is happy with this group of tight ends and has been relying on Dorvilus (pictured above) and Deleon for their leadership. Together, the two give the Owl’s offense experience and a unique skill set.

“They are very similar with their body types, they catch the ball well and both can do a lot of things - they are very versatile,” Allen said.

Spring Game format?

Pelini said on Monday that he would like to split the team into two squads for the Spring Game, but only if he had enough able bodies. LB Randell Johnson, DB Keith Reaser, WR Lucky Whitehead and WR Daniel McKinney are all expected to miss the scrimmage.

The goal for the coaching staff will be to shuffle the first and second teams, to see how players interact and adapt to the speed of the game.

“The most interesting thing about the Spring Game, is that right now you have your one’s operating at a different level than your two’s - especially with communication. Now you mix all of those guys together it will be interesting to see how the two’s can handle working with the one’s,” Pelini said.

Practice Observations:

QB Melvin German looked impressive working with the first team offense. Pelini mentioned that it was his second or third consecutive “great day” of practice… WR Daniel McKinney was returning punts after the session along with a contingent of other skill players… DE Martin Wright had a pair of sacks in team drills, as he was able to work the right side of the offensive line… WR DeAndre Richardson had the catch of the morning, snagging a ball before falling out of bounds… Redshirt freshmen RT Arthur Crouse and LT Dillon DeBoer worked with the second team… FAU was in helmets for practice on Monday and is set scrimmage for the second time this spring on Wednesday. The Owls will have just three more practices following the scrimmage before the Spring Game on April 20th.

WE all know German HAS talent, we saw it in his JC films and he was 2nd team All-American too. I REALLY don't care who our qb is, just that he plays good. And having two or three good qb's is what ANY AND EVERY team desires, QB DEPTH!

This much is true^^^^

It also seems both MG3 & JQJ have both shown they are capable of leading our offense. Can't wait to see what Hankerson & Juste can do!

I really like the depth at TE we just need to settle on a QB and sure up our o-line and our offense should make significant strides this year. When Alex committed to FAU I told him to become a leader of men and a leader in society and he has done that ,more then what I expected from him  cause he's a very silent person but he leads with his actions on and off the field. Im ready to see us exploit defenses with our 2 TE sets.
