The Owls find themselves in midst of a difficult stretch of games. The team has lost three of their past four contests, and played their way out of first in the Sun Belt Conference standings.

With a series loss to Louisiana and a loss to Miami on the road, FAU is in desperate need of turning things around before post-season play begins in a few weeks.

Troy travels to Boca Raton tied with the Owls for second place in the conference standings along with Western Kentucky, who plays host to Arkansans-Little Rock over the weekend. The slate of games should create some separation within the league and show exactly were the Owls stand – as Troy is riding a six-game winning streak.

FAU was in position to take down Miami Tuesday night, behind the bat of Tyler Rocklein who knocked two doubles and drove in a run, but a collapse from the bullpen resulted in the loss. Bo Logan gave up a score sixth, before Michael Sylvestri allowed a pair of runs in the seventh. The defeat came as the Owl’s fifth of the season when giving up six runs or more.

Despite the issues from the bullpen, FAU still leads the conference with a 3.54 ERA. However, that average will be put to the test this weekend against a dangerous Troy lineup that boasts a .307 batting average. The Trojan’s lead the nation in in slugging percentage (.481) and doubles per game (2.6), while ranking second in runs per game (8.2) and third in runs scored (328).

Troy’s one-two-three hitters, form one of the best hitting trios in the conference, as each player is batting .349 or better. Logan Pierce sports a league-best .399 average and has 46 RBIs to his name while Danny Collins, the team’s number three hitter, is batting .395 on the year and with 56 RBIs. The two have combined to take 55 walks, which has gave the Trojans a endless supply of base runners.

Head coach John McCormack will try and stymie Troy’s offense with his usual weekend rotation. Austin Gomber, who has picked up losses in his last two appearances, will get the ball on Friday before Jermey Strawn takes the mound on Saturday. Freshman Brendon Rhodes will remain the Sunday starter, despite a poor effort last weekend when he gave up six runs in the first inning.

Rocklein (pictured above) leads the Owls with 24 extra base hits (16 DBL, 2 TRP, and 6 HR) this season. His two doubles against the Hurricanes moved him into a three way tie for 4th place in the Sun Belt standings for extra baggers.

Mitch Morales leads FAU with a .347 batting average and is 6-for-18 with 4 RBIs in his last five games. The shortstop has been a spark at the tail end of the Owl’s lineup and should look to continue his hot hitting this weekend.

This weekend’s series will mark the final home contests in the month of April. The Owl’s are 3-1 this month at home, compared to their 3-5 record on the road.
