Marshall at a Glance:

Thursday was a good night for Conference USA home men's basketball teams as all six won in front of their own crowds, and the Herd was no exception. Marshall outscored Florida International 46-34 in the second half en route to a 80-68 win. This all despite Panther Tymell Murphy's sinking a career best 29 points.

Sophomore guard Chris Thomas led the Herd with 19 points and freshman Kareem Canty recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 assists. As a team, Marshall shot 50.9 percent (29-57) from the field.

After an 0-4 start to league action, the Herd has since won 2-of-3. This is somewhat impressive considering the major loss of leading scorer Elijah Pittman (21.4 ppg) who was suspended from the team indefinitely back in December for an undisclosed matter. Pittman was the lone returning starter from last season's 13-19 unit, and the team currently has eight underclassmen on the active roster.

Marshall head man Tom Herrion and FAU Coach Mike Jarvis enjoy a long running friendship. Prior to entering coaching professionally, Herrion once served as a volunteer assistant for Jarvis while he was at Cambridge Rindge and Latin.

Although the Herd have not faced the Owls previously, Herrion has. His College of Charleston squad knocked off a Matt Doherty coached FAU team 90-73 in 2005 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY.

FAU at a Glance:

The Owls have lost three of their last four games, with the only win ironically coming against the most talented team they have faced. Last night against Charlotte, FAU set a season low for both free throws made (5), and percentage (38.5%) as the 49ers pulled away for a 62-53 victory. Down just a basket with 2:59 to go, the wheels fell off the bus for the Owls and they missed their last five shots.

Forward Kelvin Penn contributed a season high 35 minutes, and was very busy around the rim with five blocks - also a season best. The junior will have to endure another marathon session on Saturday as there is no immediate relief in sight for a short handed FAU roster in the front court.

Pablo Bertone etched his 11th 20+ point effort into the record books, and posted a career high in steals with four against the 49ers. He's that much closer to a 1,000 career point mark, and now needs only 35 for the milestone.

Florida Atlantic comes into Saturday's tilt at 1-10 on the year when the opposition shoots at 33.3% or better from behind the arc. As fate would have it, Marshall is near the bottom of the stack with just a 31.3% showing to offer. However, the Herd also has the league's 3rd best defensive effort against the same, holding foes to 29.7%.

FAU has spent a good amount of time on the road as of late, but that will change form here out. Once concluded, the current three game road stint will give way to a healthy mix of six home and three away games.

Coach Jarvis, along with all other C-USA head men's basketball coaches, will join Herrion in drawing awareness towards the cause of Autism research on Saturday. The group, along with a number of other coaches on the national level, will be wearing pins from the "Autism Speaks" organization.

Latest Line:

MU -3

Owl's Nest Prediction

Marshall may be young and down a player or two, but they are still a dangerous team and play well at home. The Herd edges FAU in shooting percentage, and while neither team is particularly good at the charity stripe, Marshall gets there almost seven times more each outing. That alone is good for four points.

The Owls will have an easier time in the paint, and Raffington should return to form with a double-double. However, three point production will likely suffer at the hand of the Herd's perimeter stinginess.

MU -6
