Release via SID Justin Johnson:
Florida Atlantic’s softball team opened the 2013 season splitting their two games at the FAU Kick-Off Classic on Friday night.
The Owls picked up a big 3-0 win over No.18/19 Louisville in their second game of the night. The first run came in the second inning when Whitley Herb hit a single through the left side to score Shelby Knox, who hit a triple earlier that inning. A Christina Martinez triple in the bottom of the fourth inning scored the other two runs.
Samantha Messer went the distance in the circle, giving up eight hits and had four strikeouts. Messer’s record moves to 1-0 on the year.
The Owls fell 3-2 to Northern Illinois in the first game of the night. Northern Illinois took the early lead off a three-run homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Shelby Knox drove in FAU’s first run with a triple to the center field wall. Kathryn Spack’s RBI single drove in FAU’s second run. Christina Martinez also had a base hit in the third inning.
Kylee Hanson threw a complete game for FAU. She fell to 0-1 on the year, despite giving up just five hits and had three strikeouts.
The FAU Kick-Off Classic continues on Saturday, Feb. 8, where the Owls will face St. John’s University at 6 p.m. and Tulsa at 8 p.m.

The Red Storm rallied from an 0-2 deficit in the bottom of the 7th to win in walk-off fashion in a disappointing loss for FAU. Paige Pender took the loss for the Owls.
Later, they evened matters up with a shutout against the Golden Hurricane that saw the international rule invoked. Neither team was able to post a hit through five innings of play. Christina Martinez's RBI single in the 8th gave Florida Atlantic the win.
Florida Atlantic (2-2) concludes tournament play against Ohio State on Sunday at 11:00 AM.

The Owls got five scoreless innings from Samantha Messer (2-0, 0.75 ERA), and cashed in for all of their runs in the first inning of play.
Right fielder Whitley Herb was 2-of-3 and scored a run. Florida Atlantic (3-2) took advantage of an OSU error and passed ball for their other scores.
The team will next play host to Mississippi State on Thursday in a scheduled double header for day one of the Strike Out Cancer tournament. Game times are 5:00 and 7:00 PM.

The Bulldogs, who hit four homers for the double-header, jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the 2nd inning of game one, and that production would hold for the distance.
FAU second baseman Melissa Martinez led off the 7th inning with her first homer of 2014 to give the Owls their lone score.
Game two was all MSU, as their pitching staff combined for a four hit, 23 strikeout showing.
Florida Atlantic (3-4) saw a scoreless contest through five innings of the second game, but the Bulldogs broke matters open with four runs in their sixth trip to the plate.
The team will have Friday off before taking on LIU Brooklyn at 3:00 PM on Saturday in the first of two games. Maryland will follow at 5:30 PM.

Amanda Wilson (2-0) picked up the win in game one against the Blackbirds (1-7), tossing a complete effort with just three hits allowed, four strikeouts, and no walks.
Right fielder Whitley Herb was 4-of-4 for the contest and Christina Martinez (2-4), Melissa Martinez, Shelby Knox, and Jordan Stovall each posted an RBI.
The Owls posted two runs in the third before adding solo efforts in both the fourth and sixth frames, and saw a total of 11 hits.
Freshman Kylee Hanson (1-2) earned her first victory of the year in the second contest, also tossing a full game with four hits, four strikeouts, and one walk.
Herb was solid in that game as well, going 2-of-3 with an RBI against the Terrapins (1-8). Laura Mann, who had a homer in the 2nd inning, drove in a pair of runs, and Stovall added one more to her daily total with an RBI in the 5th.
The Owls (5-4) will next take on South Carolina on Sunday at 11:00 AM at FAU Softball Stadium.

The game was scoreless until the top of the third when the Gamecocks scored off a pair of singles for their first run. Later in the fourth they sent a pair across the plate.
Florida Atlantic (5-5) responded with their lone score in the bottom of the inning courtesy of catcher Mickey Bell's RBI single which scored shortstop Shelby Knox.
The run tally remained until the 6th, when South Carolina (6-2) connected for the game's only homer, giving them a 4-1 advantage.
The Gamecocks then used three hits, combined with three FAU errors, for the final four runs on the day.
Florida Atlantic had committed just one error prior to Sunday's action.
Samantha Messer (2-1) took the loss for the Owls, who will be off until Friday when they take on Kentucky and Penn State at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM respectively.

The Owls faced off against Kentucky in game one, and would lead 1-0 through four innings of play courtesy of Jordan Stovall’s RBI single in the first which drove in Whitley Herb (2-of-4).
However the Wildcats (12-0) struck for four runs in the fifth frame before adding three more later in the seventh for a 7-1 victory.
Amanda Wilson (2-1) took the loss for the Owls.
Game two would be scoreless until Penn State (5-6) capitalized upon a 2RBI triple in their third at bat.
The Owls immediately answered with a score in the fourth inning, and later tied it up in the seventh as Mickey Bell drove in Carnesha Thompson. Thompson led off the stanza with a single turned triple thanks to a Nittany Lion error.
With the game heading into extra innings and the tiebreaker rule in effect, Stovall then earned her second RBI for the night with sacrifice fly that sent Melissa Martinez across the plate from third to give Florida Atlantic what would be the winning run.
Owl hurler Kylee Hanson improved to 2-2 on the season with the win.
FAU (6-6) will face-off against Penn State again tomorrow at 6:00 PM before taking on Pittsburgh at 8:00 PM.
