Three more walk-ons for FAU

FAU coach Charlie Partridge said at the conclusion of the Owls’ spring camp, that he was going to have some discussions with his staff about the team’s tentative 105-man roster. Those talks will have to include a few new walk-ons.

Hagerty defensive lineman Garrett Cox committed to FAU over the weekend as a preferred walk-on after speaking with Partridge. He plans to be in Boca Raton this summer, along with Dr. Phillips tight end Brett Seelig and Tavares linebacker Garrett Payne.

Cox - a 6-foot-3, 225-pound, second-team All-Conference selection last season - projects as a defensive end, and should provide an extra body for a defensive line unit that was limited to just six healthy scholarship players for a majority of spring camp.

Cox was also being recruited by Division III powerhouse Mount Union, and is the high school teammate of FAU freshman quarterback Jason Driskel.

Seelig is a 6-foot-5, 235-pound athlete who played both tight end and offensive tackle last season. Like with the defensive line, FAU was limited with it’s numbers at tight end this past spring.

Payne, who held a FAMU offer, is a 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker who was an honorable mention in the Orlando Sentinel’s Super60 recruiting rankings.

FAU now has 10 players who have committed to the program as preferred walk-ons:

LB  Jerrad Ward - Dwyer
DB Richard Thompson - Olympic Heights
DE Garrett Cox - Hagerty
QB Dom Marino - Venice
OL Matt Weiner - Suncoast
OL Hayden Brockwell - American Heritage-Delray
OL Kirean Leen - Pope John Paul
ATH Corey May - Douglas
TE Brett Seelig - Dr. Phillips
LB Garrett Payne - Tavares

One name on the list jumps out at me. Dom Marino is very well known on the west coast. I think he played for two schools his last two seasons. Surprised we were able to get him as a walk on. Pretty good player.
