Owls complete the sweep…game release via SID Justin Johnson:

Whitley Herb’s single drove in Carnesha Thompson and gave the Florida Atlantic University softball team a 4-3 win over UTEP in 11 innings on Saturday. The win completed a series sweep for the Owls.

FAU (30-21, 12-9 Conference USA) went up 2-0 in the first inning when Jordan Stovall tripled to right field, allowing Christina and Melissa Martinez to score. UTEP (15-30, 7-11) took the lead in the third inning on a three-run homerun that appeared to go foul, but was ruled a fair ball. The Owls tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Shelby Knox scored on throwing error by the Miner catcher.

UTEP put the go ahead run on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but couldn’t change the score. In the 11th, Thompson singled, then stole second, putting the winning run in scoring position with two outs. Lindsey Shell beat out an infield base hit, setting the stage for Herb.

Herb singled to center, driving in Thompson’s game winning run. Samantha Messer threw five scoreless innings in relief for her 14th win of the season.

The Owls will take some time off for exams before wrapping up the regular season with a three-game series at Middle Tennessee. The series starts with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m.

The FAU softball team lost to North Texas 5-4 in 10 innings on Thursday night during day one of the 2014 C-USA Championship.

After two scoreless innings, the Mean Green (31-21) took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning which was paced by a three run shot to left from 3B Jordan Terry.

However, the Owls wasted no time in countering as Shelby Knox’s SAC fly plated Christina Martinez before catcher Mickey Bell sent a long ball over the wall for another three runs to even the contest.

Matters would remain that way until the top of the 10th when UNT took advantage of an FAU error to post the winning run.

Florida Atlantic (33-22) placed the tying run on second in their final at bat, but could not cash in.

Junior pitcher Samantha Messer (15-8) threw a complete effort, giving up just one earned run.

Despite the loss, the Owls conclude the year with their best winning percentage since the 2007 season.
