Notables
St. Thomas hails from the Sun Conference (NAIA). The Bobcats opened the season early on Halloween, and went 0-2 before rolling to a 109-80 victory against Morris College on Friday afternoon. They will have short rest before hitting the hardwood at FAU Arena.
Forward Lorel Beckford led the Bobcats in both scoring (14 PPG) and rebounding (10 RPG) through their first two games. The squad primarily uses a guard oriented attack built off a nine man rotation.
At just 5-6, 160 lbs Mikon Hewitt is a fiery point with speed, who comes off the bench and can weave his way into traffic dishing opportunities.
Reserve guard David Santiago manged only two shots in 15 minutes of action through the first two games, but exploded for a game high 23 points on Friday off of 8-of-11 shooting and a 4-for-4 performance at the stripe.
FAU at a Glance:
Offense - 66.2 PPG, 42.5% FG, 33.4% 3PT
Defense - 68.5 PGA, 42.1% FGA, 32.7% 3PTA
Rebounding - 36.9 PG Team, 35.4 PG Opponents
Notables
Saturday marks the first look at the 2014-15 Owls in game action.
Appointed on April 7th as Florida Atlantic's 7th Head Coach, Michael Curry will be faced with the task of replacing leading scorer Pablo Bertone (19.0 ppg) from 2013-14's roster as well as improving on marks of 10-22 overall, and 5-11 in C-USA.
To accomplish the matter, he's got four returning starters from last season - although that core may change as the season progresses.
Leaders Justin Raffington (10.1 ppg, 8.5 rpg) and Marquan Botley (11.3 ppg, 37.5% 3PT) provide a nucleus, with forward Kelvin Penn (63.0% FG, 70 BLK) and guard Jackson Trapp (7.2 ppg, 50 3PT) complimenting.
Off the bench, reserve D'Andre Johnson (67 assists, 76.2 FT%) offers solid back-up at the point, and the insertion of 6-9, 250 lb freshman forward C.J. Turman at center will likely equate to more consistent play down low for FAU.
"C.J. is an athletic big man who can help us immediately on both ends of the floor," said Curry. "With Justin and Kelvin coming back, we expect great things out of our frontcourt this coming season."
This year's version of the Owls have five players at 6-9 or better, the most in program history.
