Women's basketball lost to the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Friday afternoon…game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

Sophomore guard Shaneese Bailey had the best game of her career, but couldn’t get enough support as the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team lost the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament opener 65-57 to NJIT.

Bailey, a sophomore from Callahan, Fla., scored 26 points and snagged 17 rebounds to set career-highs in each category. She had all six of FAU’s points and five rebounds just 5:11 into the contest.

The Owls (3-2) started on fire from the field, putting them out to a 14-2 advantage over the first 7:15. FAU would extend that lead to 26-14 just four minutes later to take the largest margin of the game.

NJIT (2-2) would go on an 11-3 run over the closing minutes of the first half to cut the FAU advantage to 31-28 at the half. Bailey had 12 points and eight rebounds and the FAU defense held NJIT to just 28.6% from the field to hold onto the lead.

Much like the first half, Bailey scored FAU’s first six points of the second half to put the Owls back up by six. A 17-3 run late in the half would put NJIT up by nine with 2:15 to play. Malia Kency and Ali Gorrell each hit 3-pointers in the final minute to cut into the lead, but NJIT held on for the eight-point win.

North Dakota State defeated Northeastern 79-72 in game two to setup day two of the tournament.

FAU will face Northeastern on Saturday, Nov. 29 at a 4:30 p.m. tipoff. NDSU will then face NJIT in the championship game at 7 p.m. Fans can get free admission to the basketball games by bringing a ticket stub from the FAU vs. Old Dominion football game Saturday at noon.

The Owls answered yesterday's loss with a 81-74 win over Northeastern on Saturday afternoon.

Despite being out-rebounded 50-37, FAU (4-2) made up by setting new season marks in turnovers (6) and free throw shooting (91.3%, 21-of-23).

Florida Atlantic maintained control for the vast majority of the game, trailing for only :28 seconds early in the first half before surging to as much as a 15 point advantage and a 43-33 lead at the break.

The Lady Huskies (2-3) wouldn't go down without a fight though, and found their way to within a single point twice with under 4:00 to play in the second frame.

However Shaneese Bailey's jumper with 2:32 to play started a 10-4 close for the home team, which effectively gave them the win.

Bailey tallied a game high 21 points to go with six rebounds, and saw teammates Malia Kency (18), and Lauren Williams (13) in double digit scoring as well.

FAU will next host Webber International on Saturday, December 6th at 5:00 PM.

111-76 it should be.

I'm assuming the reason Webber had 76 points was because FAUs bench had a lot of playing time.

Long Beach State had the upper hand in the Owls tournament opener last night…game release via SID brandon Goodwin:

A large second-half run by Long Beach State cost the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team a chance at a victory on Friday in the opening game of the Beach Classic.

LBSU (10-1) went on a 13-2 run early in the second half to pull away from the Owls (5-4) for an 85-60 victory at the Walter Pyramid.

Junior Ali Gorrell recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 18 points and 11 rebounds on the night. Sophomore Shaneese Bailey scored 16 points and snagged five steals.

After the 49ers took an early lead on free throws, FAU’s Malia Kency hit her 25th 3-pointer of the season and Bailey made a fast-break layup to give the Owls their only lead of the game at 5-2.

LBSU would lead by as many as 11 at the 11-minute mark before FAU pulled back within two on a 3-pointer by Kat Wright. The 49ers scored on a layup and a free throw with five seconds left to take a 38-33 lead into the locker room.

Women's basketball drops their second contest in the Beach Classic on Saturday…game release via SID brandon Goodwin:

Junior Ali Gorrell and sophomore Shaneese Bailey recorded double-doubles on Saturday, but couldn’t carry the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team to victory as the Owls lost to New Mexico State 57-44 at the Beach Classic.

The Owls (5-5) have dropped three games in a row and will return home to host UNC-Wilmington at 7 p.m. on Dec. 29 at FAU Arena.

NMSU (5-6) started off hot, jumping out to a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes of the contest. The Aggies would extend the lead to as many as 18 at the 6:56 mark at 27-9. FAU then went on a 9-0 run to pull back to within nine points with 2:55 to play in the first half.

An 84-80 win over UNC-Wilmington Monday night snapped a three game slide for the Owls, ending 2014 on a positive note.

Despite being out rebounded 49-30, FAU (6-5) cashed in for a 26-12 advantage in points off turnovers in a contest which saw 24 lead changes but neither squad having more than a five point edge.

UNCW (4-6) chose to ride the shooting of Kelva Atkins, who registered 37 points in 39 minutes of court time.

But it wouldn't be enough to overcome Florida Atlantic, which led 39-37 at halftime, and posted a 45-43 showing for the second half - completing the difference.

Atkins pair of free throws with :27 remaining saw the game's final tie, before the Owls rattled of the final four points at the line in response.

Ali Gorrell (27 points), and Lauren Williams (7 points, 2 steals) combined for the quartet respectively.

Shaneese Bailey (12 points) and Malia Kency (11 points) were in double figures for FAU, who next travels to Miami on January 4th for a contest against Florida International. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
