Riding high off of a huge win against the top ten Hurricanes, the Owls baseball team welcomes in Big Ten opponent Ohio State for a three game set.
FAU has had to rely on some late game heroics from key players early in the season to get to this undefeated position, including three of the first four games have been decided later than the eighth inning, including two walk-offs. The Owls will look to capitalize on a long rest from the Buckeyes team, who hasn't played since last Sunday, coming into the series.
Much like FAU, Ohio State is also coming into this weekend series without a loss, boasting a perfect record over the previous weekend in the Snowbird Classic in nearby Port Charlotte. The Buckeyes defeated three different opponents in as many days, including a shutout and a walk-off win.
Designated Hitter Esteban Puerta leads the Owls offensively early, batting .429 with a .571 SLG% and 2 doubles. Catcher Kevin Abraham is the only Owls regular without a hit in his 9 attempts at bat, and will be looking for his first hit on Friday.
Kyle Miller will start on Friday and look to improve to 2-0 on the season after a spectacular 10 strikeout performance against the UConn on opening night en route to a 16-5 win over the Huskies.
Abraham hit what would have under "normal" circumstances been a double, but it was ruled the runner on first missed second on his way to third, and was thus forced out. That, by rule, negated the hit, turning the double into a 2-base fielders choice. At this early point in the season, that knocked .299 off Abraham's OPS, and his OBP would be otherwise be a nice .385. He scored the tying run on Saturday.
Also, Santiago's walk-off single probably have been a double, but as the winning run was on third, Santiago, by rule, was limited to a single.
In the back of my mind, FAU already has two more doubles than what the rules of the game allow.
